Paper Trail For An Idp

Featured Replies

So all I wanted was an International Driving Permit. To get this the difficult bit of paperwork that the Transport Office require is ‘proof of address’. They told me that they will only except a Work Permit, Letter from your Embassy or Yellow Book. So I decide to go for the Yellow Book as I'm retired.

The Local Council Office said that they required the following before they would issue me a Yellow Book.

Copy Of Main Page of my Passport Translated and then Legalised at the MFA.

My biography, written in Thai and to include

Full names of my Father and Mother,my Mothers maiden name and their Nationality.

When and where I was born. Any Brothers and Sisters and are they older or younger than me.

My blood group and any identifying scars on my body.

Why I came to live in Thailand.

What is my job here.

My relationship to the owner of the house.

Copy of my Birth Certificate

Copy of The House Blue Book and to see the book

Completed Form by the house owner to say I can live there.

Copy of House Owner ID Card and seethe original, so house owner to attend.

Three one inch photos.

So to get the Passport Bit.

Arrive at British Embassy by 7:50 am, only a couple of people before me. They opened up for service by 8:10 and ten minutes later I had been processed. Told to come back between 14:00 and 15:00 Hrs to collect document. How silly to have to wait all that time for something that can’t take more than 5minutes to produce!

So arrived back at 13:50, bit of a queue, anyway away from there by 14:30.

At translation ‘office’ inside MFA by 15:30, First snag they wanted to see our marriage certificate to ensure they translated my name correctly. So paid the fee and they agreed to do my translation first on the following morning when I brought in the certificate.

Next day, translator arrived late, anyway all done by 8:30am.

Then upstairs to get the ‘express’ service (800baht instead of 400baht). Stupid woman gave me the wrong queue ticket ( think you need a C ticket and not an E ticket like she gave me) so it was one hour before I saw anyone. Ten minutes later all handed in and told to come back in three hours. Which I did and received the document.

Then off to the Tessaban Office with Mrs JAS.

Must have spent about one hour with the officer whilst several forms were filled in and questions answered. Then had to wait maybe 15minutes before called back to check some paperwork and receive the Yellow Book.

Tomorrow morning off to get my IDP

It should be noted that not all district offices require the same paperwork and information for the yellow House Registration Book.

The single biggest problem in communication is the illusion that it has taken place

Indeed, I didn't need a translated copy of my passport ID-card. As I am married to a Thai they just took the Thai translation of my name and such from the marrige register.

I only needed:

- letter from my embassy concerning my address, have it translated and next legalised by the MFA

- passport

- confirmation from house woner that I was allowed to register

I also brought along my wedding certificate and copy of entry in marriage register and work permit, just to confirm my status and to make sure my official name in Thai is the same as in WP and wedding register.

Next I needed to translate the names of my parents on the spot. Only their first names as the middle names and last names are not recorded.

For the translation of the letter of the embassy I provided the translator with my name and details inThai according WP and marriage register.

Note that if you are not in a hurry and take the regular translation, the MFA will send the legalised documents to your home for 60 baht by EMS (includes enveloppe and stamps). Only takes about 4 days in that case. Works for the MFA in Chiang Mai as well.

Truly amazing, Pakkret wanted Passport translating and legalising but accepted House owners confirmation of where I lived and your place wanted address legalising but accepted just a translation of your name into Thai from your passport. BUT you had WP, maybe makes a different. My parents full names were translated and recorded.

Anyway anyone using Pakkret Office knows then score.

My Ket provided a copy of their instruction book pages pertaining to yellow book issuance. The list of documents was very similar to the OP's list except the bio information was collected using the Ket interview form (using the officer's computer.) After the interview, she printed the multi page interview form and I signed along with my witness (my wife.) All in all it took about two hours. The instructions stated 6 photos but they only took two. The longest element in the process for me was getting a certified copy of my passport and having it translated and approved by MFA. I used a service and it took a week to get done (Baht 1500 cost.)

Now that was very close to me actually, All the information was put onto a duplicated form and my wife and I had to agree that it was correct and each sign. It cost me 1030Baht form the BE passport Page, 450 baht for the translation and 800Baht at the MFA (quick service 400Baht normally).

Anyway cheaper that a guy that I talked to who was paying 90,000Baht to an agent who was sorting a visa to the UK for his 'soon to be wife'. It may have included the marriage. He was been transported around by the agent. Should have read this site I think!

I went to Chonburi transport office with my letter from immigration (residency letter) my passport and that is all. Paid them 505 baht and had it within 30 minutes. Every year I do the same.

Yes it's residency letter, or Work Permit or Yellow Book. Passport, driving licence, photos and 505 Baht.
