Current Options For Apply For A Visa Whilst In Thailand

Recommended Posts

Have moved back to Thailand with my Thai wife and 2 children after spending 4 years in the UK together.

We planned to come back for years and eventually when we did, I tottally forgot to sort out my Type O multiple entry visa before we went and have ended up with a 30 visa exemption given at the airport.

I know, what a twit!

It seems that since we lived here before thing have changed with the visa rules and am lead t understand that I can no longer get a 30 day visa by leaving the country and coming back in again. We are staying near Sisaket and are not for from the Lao border so this would have been ideal.

I plan to pop back to the UK in mid July but my permission to stay here runs out on the 31st May so I am eagerly looking for ways to extend my stay until my UK return.

Can I apply for a 60 day tourist visa here in Sisaket? Then perhaps extend it by 30 days? I seem to remember being able to do this back in 2007 when I first came to Thailand but am unsure if it's still the case.

If I can, what do I need to provide?

Sorry if this is already covered on the forum, I have had a search about but am concerned about which information is still current and I'm running out of days to act on this.

Thanks in advance!

If you got 400k baht in the bank you can get a Extensiosn of Stay based on married to a thai wife, good for 1 year and no need to leave the country just go to immigration every 90 days, if you havent got 400k then go to Savannaket laos as last time I went i got a 1 yr non-o by showing my marrige cert and kids birth certificate.

As you are married you can also work on a NON-O

You can get 30 day visa exemption by departing and coming back in but only by air, land crossings give a 15 day entry.

You cannot get a Tourist visa within Thailand, but you can get a 60 day extension to visit wife and/or children. No financials need to be shown.

Normal paperwork needed ie marriage cert wifes id/tabien baan passport copies. That should be enough for you, end may to mid july.

Apply at local Immigration.

or extension options as above.

Thanks for the swift repsonse!

400K? hmm not quite! But good to know that is an option for the future.

The Lao option sounds like a good plan though. Should we fly there or drive?

Just looked into this option with the immigration office in Sisaket but my wifes name is registered in Phuket (where we used to live) so they said we would have to go to the immigration office there!

I suppose we could just get here ID changed but we do plan to move back to Phuket in October on a more long-term basis and my wife belives that keeping her name in that territory would be beneficial when we come to get a car, mortgage etc.

If you are not far from savannaket then you can just drive , its not far from mukhadan, the cost for a 1yr Non-O is about 5k then every 90 days you need to leave the country to do a border run, you can get 15 month out of it if you tiime it right, ie do a border run 1 day before the visa expires.

Right, it's a plan then!

We will drive looks like about a 4 hour trip. Will get a hotel in Mukhadan for the night and to the visa in the morning.

Probably plan to go up on Thursday next week and get the visa sorted on Friday morning. Hopefully it's a drop-in service, no need to arrange an appointment??

Will report back when do for the benefit of other readers.

You will need to have a night in Savannaket, you drop the visa off at the embassy in the morning and pick it up the next afternoon, but looking at the calendar next Friday is a bank holiday, so if you need it by next week go on Tuesday night, drop passport on wednesday AM before 11 and pick up on Thursday PM after 1

If you need more time you can go to immigration and get a 60 day extension to visit your wife.

She would have to go with you. Have copies of marriage certificate, wife's ID and house book. Copy of your passport photo page, entry/permit to stay stamps and copy of TM6 departure card.

It might also help to have some proof of residence in Sisaket but should not be required for this extension.

For trip to Savannkhet I suggest you schedule your trip to arrive late afternoon the day before you plan on applying. You can park just before the bridge and then take the bus from there into Savannakhet.

As Ubonjoe says.

From Police order 777/2551

2.24 In the case of an alien visiting a Thai spouse or child:
Permission will be granted for a period of not more than 60 days at a time.
(1) Proof of relationship.
(2) In the case of a spouse, their marital relationship shall be de jure (legitimate) and de facto.

Immigration should issue the extension with some proof that they are now staying in Sisaket.

Lots of people get these and one year extensions even though the house book is for another province.

There has been a few posts lately about immigration getting strict on thai lady and where they are registered to live, generally speaking unless you have brought your house most thai people still have house paper registered to the family house

Ha! Nothings ever simple. Just about to leave for the drive to Laos and my wife piped up and revealed that her Tabien Baan is back in the UK!!

Any point in me going to Laos now? My 30 day exemption runs out in 2 days so one way or another I need a visa, can I ge a 60 day tourist visa in Laos without the Tabien Baan?

You do not need for a tourist visa - and you do not need the actual document - just a fax/email copy is all that is required is someone in UK that could sent it. Not sure why it was ever taken out of Thailand?

Think there may be a copy in Phuket so fingers crossed, before tomorrow morning we have contacted someone to send it over. Otherwise it looks like I'll just get the tourist visa for now and grab a visa from Hull when I retrun to the UK in July.

Well, turns out that the Tabien Baan is gone, my wife is currently registered at an address that now belongs to someone else! Ditching the Non 'O' plan and going with the 60 day tourist visa. The big pain in the arse is that we could have done this locally if we had got her a new tabien baan here in Sisaket.

Well, ho hum, we are now in Savanakhet staying at the Savan Vegas Casino. Nice enough place and cheap as chips.

Got a feeling I got robbed on the way in, got stopped at the border and told I needed a Visa to enter Laos. Paid B1500 for this and then another b100 and then another guy popped up who needed another b200.

Had no idea what was going on, so used to walking though imigration on a UK passport without any problems that this caught me off gaurd.

Got to the hotel and everyone seems to want to sort my Thai Tourist out for me, no fee!?!?! All part of the service here apparently.

Will report back tomorrow for the sake of others on the forum who may be looking at doing this run.

The visa fee was normal - cheaper if you have USD. Suspect the other asking may have been extra tips or you did not have photos for visa or something. Yes that facility is an advertiser here and runs visa services so routine for them.

Last time i went no tabien bahhn needed just kids birth certs and the marrige cert and they wernt really bothered about that just wanted to really see kids birth certs

If you still havent been yet then go for the NON 0 first, they will tell you if you have the right stuff needed if not then just fill out another form for Tourist Visa
