howto
Geeze I made a huge frack-up... I've 2 disks, in a desktop, a small seagate and a 1TB Samung. I boot off the Samsung... it is partitioned... 32GB for the OS(C:), then 47GB unallocated... the remainder is Data (D:), 800+GB, 32GB free All formatted NTFS on Win7 Ult 64 bit. I attempted to expand D: to pick up the unallocated space, using the system tool 'disk mgmnt'... BIG MISTAKE It convertered the disk from Basic to Dynamic. And all D: data is gone. It shows C: and will boot, the rest shows unallocated space. I did NOT format this 'new' unallocated space. Grabbing my butt with both hands... I then booted with hiren boot cd... ran PartedMagic hoping to recover. I don't understand what I see... it does not see that unallocated space nor an option to 'redo'/'recover'/'reconvert' the volume/partition/files. I'm screwed at this point. SO... I need to go back to 'basic' disk from 'dynamic' and then restore the D: partition and it's files. I'm certain 'System Restore' will not fix this. And I will not mess with the disk any furthur. Suggestions/Advice welcome. I will NOT take this to Zeer to a Thai. I could send the drive to Gregory M. I would prefer to give it a go myself... I've got some tech chops. PLEASE hold my hand and walk me thru this. Cheers.
SoFarAndNear
What do you mean with "And all D: data is gone."? Do you still can see drive D: or can you seee it and it is empty now?
howto
C: is there, D: is gone, No, D: is not seen. All total remaining disk space, is listed as 'unallocated' space in Win7 PartedMagic does not see that unallocated space. That whole disk is is listed as 'dynamic'. SoFarAndNear
Hi, ok thats looks quite bad, because now it looks like the partition information is gone or at least broken if Windows shows it as unallocated. I dont think that it will makes a difference if you convert it back to basic. Because somethin gis already broken with your Master Boot record. If you have luck and it is just the MBR but your partition is still untouched on the disk you need a tool to search for partitions on the hard disc. Try this here and search http://findandmount.com/ and search if you find you partition D:
howto
Well, ok, however... how the hell can I run that app? Posing the question... download it to a usb thumb boot hiren into mini XP mode and run it from there? XP does not support dynamic ntfs discs
SoFarAndNear
If your OS is on partition C: then it should be no problem to Boot in your normal OS because it will not allocate space outside the partition C:
ThaidDown
Assuming that you can still boot from the c: drive suggest download and run Easeus Partition Recovery. Free and available from http://www.easeus.com/partition-recovery/ It's designed for these 'accidental' erasures.
howto
@sofarandnear@thaiddown Please, a moment for me to thank you for your help. I've 40 years IT, I know DOS, Win3, Win98, NT4, W2K, Digital Unix. I do not know XP or Win7. Please bare with me... The entire Samsung disk is now a dynamic disk. And I prefer to not install/write anything to it. That includes the C: , which will boot. Again I ask how to do this, with no installs to C: Regaining the partition is one thing Reverting the disk back to basic from dynamic is another. If this was W2k, I've several hard core tools to use. It's not and I don't know what I'm doing. (If I did I would not be in this mess) Arrrggggg.
ThaidDown
Understand why you do not want to write to disk. First would like to say that I have never had to do this (lucky I guess) Options with Easeus.. download direct to USB or other disc and install on other disc and run from there (cannot find a portable version) or use TestDisk, well respected software, description here http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk this is available as portable software from http://www.portablefreeware.com/?id=1114 so just change your download location to a usb stick or the other hard drive and run directly from there. As portable it should not write to C: at all. Good luck.
thaimite
If you are really concerned about your data I suggest you remove the drive from the systems and install a new / 2nd hand small drive and put a system of your choice on it. Then after that is done either connect your damaged disk to another SATA port or in an external enclosure so as it can be worked on in isolation from the OS
JetsetBkk
I recall running TestDisk many years ago to recover a lost partition: http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk If I recall correctly, you don't install it, you just run the executable (but I might be wrong about that). buenavad
I'm not sure about this, but, try boot with Ubuntu CD and check if you can see your data in your disk, I did that once long time ago and I had the opportunity of backup all my files and then format that partition in windows.
howto
Yo howto the caveman =1 computer =0 I win @thaiddown EaseUS could not see that D: partition. Scrapped. @thaiddown and @jetsetbkk TestDisk hurled chunks Perhaps it did see the partitions, but I could not follow it. Too complicated 30 choices of what to convert to... I've not inclined. Scrapped Googled, I did downloaded... Partition Wizard 4.2 Free from http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/26829-convert-dynamic-disk-basic-disk.html I used it to convert the disk from dynamic to basic. Worked Reboot. Again 'Recover Partitions' Worked. Partitions and Files are back. However... all sharing links are lost (no big deal, expected) Sys Tools... Disk Mgmnt... does not see that extended partition... but the win7 explorer file manager does. Thats weird. And it does boot off the disk into win7. Next is to make the 120km trip to zeer, get a new disk and do a copy with xxcopy. (and perhaps a ssd for that os part) Thanks to all, I'm not suggesting this ordeal is over... aarn
As buenavad posted, you can bring your windoze misadventure to a satisfactory conclusion by getting someone to create a live linux usb, which will allow you to explore then copy your precious files to another HDD. Be aware, you can get another copy of win 7 ult online, put it on a usb, then using your original licence key, reinstall to new HDD/ssd. Thus you don't have to buy a new copy windoze... or try a dodgy local one. http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-windows_install/hard-drive-failure-windows-reinstall-and-product/718a42de-f8ab-4909-8bb0-5bad037f6b00?msgId=74aedac3-cd35-411a-811c-c0788afaa5d2&tab=AllReplies Cheers, AA
bangkokburning
Just what aarn said. Make a bootable usb, boot, copy files and repartition. Continuing to use the disk will only bring grief.
