That will get me to where i am going plus hotel .

That would have only been 500 Malaysian.

Also I think where you make the exchange makes a difference some exchanges here in Chiang Mai give better rates than banks and others.

I have heard there is one by the Iron Bridge and one by Thai Pha gate that give the best rates. I imagine it will be the same in Malaysia. The one place you never want to exchange if you can get away from it is the airports.

Normal rule of thumb is to xchg currency in the currency-country on arrival, but as Dolly says never ever at an airport.

yes the best place to change money is the money exchange by the iron bridge,and of course to change back to baht when you come back,propaly wont re exchange small currency notes.

Forgive me, I'm no mathematician but if you paid 5,000 Baht and got 515 Ringgit, surely that's 9.7, not 10.3...
