A really good suit requires superior cutting. A very skilled craft with very few really good ones who demand and get huge salaries at Saville Row and New York. Trickle down to South East Asia and the chances of getting a good cutter at the tailor is next to nil. In my Hong Kong days years ago when it was touted as the place to go for tailored suits, my experience was that the suits made there fit like a glove, but who wants a suit to fit like a glove. One in four suits I bought there came out right.

I have found that buying an imported suit from a major retailor in Chiang Mai and then having it "fitted" or "tailored" for you by a good local "tailor", (translate that to "seamstress") is the way to go. By buying your suit off the rack, you can see what you are getting and can shop the various brands until you find one that fits well. They perfect the fit with a seamstress and your good to go.

In Chiang Mai, I think there is one large clothing factory where most of the cutting and tailoring is done, with a seamstress "tailor" traveling from the factory to each retail shop to conduct the fitting by appointment. The factory uses patterns to do the cutting which is a "made to measure" method, not a tailored suit. If you are not a perfect standard size, the cutting is done for that standard pattern size and then the seamstress struggles to make it fit during the "fitting".

Hubby got a suit at Fashion King in the Night Bazaar area -- it's the best looking-suit he's ever had. Frank, the owner, measured him and was the one who made adjustments when Hubby came in to try on the partially finished suit. There was no "seamstress tailor" doing the fitting in the shop -- just the owner.

We expecially like the way that Frank talked with Hubby during the sales process to learn how often he'd wear the suit, where, what he'd be doing when he wore the suit, etc -- he didn't try to oversell, but instead recommended fabric and style that was exactly right.

ProTHAI Expat:

The best / most logical post I have ever read about suit makers. I knew the luvly jubbly bullshit was just that but did not know why.

Hong Kong Taylor in the night bazaar on the corner of Changklan and the soi with the Muslim Mosque does good work and does his own measuring. He has a wide selection of fabric and is a wealth of information on details.

You have me worried when you say the Frank wanted to know how often and what your husband would be doing when he wore the suit. Sounds to me like one of those paper suits they were selling in North America several years ago.

well it's refreshing that somebody wants a new suit. so many cheapskates in the Chiang mai forum want used baby beds or used computers or eating in restaurants giving enormous amounts of food. looking for bargain housing, ideally second hand typewriter, my budget is 5,000 baht (for housing), "you never said how much you paid". it goes in and on.

this does NOT exist to the same extent as it does in the CM forum.

is CM filled with old ladies counting their pennies, not caring about quality. just quantity and price.

sad really

No far from it -- he wanted to know if Hubby will wear the suit mostly in Thailand or in a colder climate and what type of meetings/events he'll be attending when he wears it. You could wear something more creative if you worked in a creative industry and you need something more conservative if you attend meetings with Thai government and banking officials.

The suit is beautiful and amazingly never seems to need pressing -- he just hangs it out in an area with good air ciruclation for 12 hours and it's good to go again.

Thanks for clearing that up. I really was worried because I intend to go to Fashion King within the next couple of days.

Fashion King made me 8 shirts, fit is perfect, yet my body is not, looks like they know their trade....

I agree with you about Neramit. They do all their tailoring in their shop and is very professional. Most CM tailors send their tailoring out to a sweat shop.

Fashion King is conducting a charity auction of on Sunday, June 9. Details here:

http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/topic/640740-fashion-auction-june-9th-to-benefit-thai-school/

It's a great opportunity to purchase a suit, shirt, etc made to measure for you for a fraction of the retail price and to help a Thai school at the same time. The way it works is that they'll auction about a dozen items in each round -- for example the auctioner will say something like "this next item is a custom-made shirt, select from any of the fabrics on this shelf -- pointing to a selection of a couple dozen fabrics" the next item may be a shirt made from fabric on the higher quality shelf, etc. Same thing with various suits -- they have fabrics at different price points -- and women's dresses and blouses.

Each round will last about an hour and there are three rounds, so you may want to come at the beginning and just watch the first round to see how it works and then hang around to bid during the second round, which will offer the same items as the first.
