I have a Lumia 920 that I bought in Thailand late last year. Yesterday there was a major firmware update that amongst other things enabled 4G. Previously under "Highest Connection Speed" the only settings were 2G & 3G. Now it is set at 4G.

Since, as an AIS subscriber, I presumably won't be using 4G in the foreseeable future should I set the highest connection speed back to 3G? Perhaps to reduce battery consumption?

Or doesn't it make any difference?

Appreciate any advice.

Thanks for that. So am I right in thinking that since having 4G enabled "might" increase battery consumption and because AIS has no 4G then it would be better to switch it off? I mean, there is no disadvantage in doing so?

Just wonder why Nokia's firmware update (which is specifically for the Lumia 920 sold in Thailand) would set 4G on by default when there is virtually no 4G in Thailand.

I'm also a bit confused by the youtube clip you attached. I can get to that Field Test page as shown but why do something so complicated when it seems that 4G can be easily disabled by changing the "Highest Connection Speed" under Mobile Network on the settings menu?

It feels to me that I'm not understanding something properly.

Thanks again for any suggestions.

^ No clue. Unless you wrote the firmware there may be no way to know if the modem is searching for a 4G signal, and if that activity results in increased power consumption.

My best guess would be that any impacts, short of actually using 4G/LTE, would be minimal, and any efforts to modify the phone may not be required.

I have no idea what changing the "Highest Connection Speed" means or does.

Assuming the 920 was purchased here in Thailand then I assume Nokia Thailand released this update, in part, to allow 920 users to use the TrueMove 4G/LTE services on 2100 MHz.

Are you experiencing shorter battery cycles after the update?

I don't know, the update was only yesterday. I'm probably fussing about nothing - so I'll just leave it as it is and see what happens.

It's just that to have this phone last a whole day with moderate use on a single charge, you need to keep on top of what it's doing in the background.

FYI...see this Link....don't know if your Lumia 920 menu options might be the same.

Thanks Pib. Yes it is the same. If the battery drains faster, I'll do that.

Based on the additional descriptions of the UI, and the fact that Nokia/MSFT including the option, I guess I'd recommend choosing 3G as the max. speed, unless you only have 2G, in which case I'd recommend that option just to save juice. When/if your provider has 4G then change it. Seems pretty straightforward now that I understand what the menu picks look like.
