Army Chief Prayuth Plans To ' Fence Off' Border The Entire Thai-Malaysian Border

Can understand the thinking, but, as this poster and others note, these fences do not have a good track record for keeping out undesirable elements anywhere, particularly in rough terrain. There is a cheap alternative being used by UN Peacekeeping forces in Africa - drones.

Whether or not these drones are armed or not is a separate issue. But they are the besr surveillance tools available.

Nothing like video evidence to show the Malaysian neighbors they are not doing their job, which is what this is all about.

The Malaysians make a national alert when some Filipino muslims try to claim thejr territory in Borneo - and rightly so.

But when the shoe is on the other foot... :)

Drones would help resolve the fundamental issue of where the support for this violence is coming from. Might be a useful bargaining chip when seeking international arbitration! :)

Think this poster needs to read some of the criticism of drones - spotting people in deeply vegetated terrain? I think not......

The real problem is deciding how much of the problem cross border traffic REALLY is or is it just Xenophobia? Z

God help Thailand if ever one of their enemies decided to invade.

It could be the shortest war in history.

The Japanese invaded Thailand at the same time as they bombed Pearl Harbour. Want to guess which took the longest?

just give back the south to malaysia. case solved.

Malaysia dosen't want them.

That is why they are cooperating with Thailand in efforts to end the terrorism in Thailand.

You surprise e sometimes hd . . . thumbsup.gif

Seems Thailand aren't the only ones with this idea..........

ANKARA: Turkey is constructing 2.5-km-long twin walls at a border crossing with Syria to increase security at the frontier following three deadly bombings this year.

The concrete walls will be built on either side of the road leading from the Turkish side of the crossing at Cilvegozu to the Syrian border gate and will be topped with barbed wire, the Turkish Customs Ministry said in a statement.

Yes, it is almost the same . . . 600kms and 2.5kms . . . almost

Aren't most of the components for a bomb available in Thailand? Aren't most of the bomb makers resident in Thailand? In fact, aren't the vast majority of insurgents Thai?

Wouldn't a wall make it harder for them to leave, which would make it on the whole safer?

I believe they are it wasn't that long ago that huge amounts were found in Bangkok. I believe they were scheduled to be exported.

The General couldn't very well admit that the wall would not stop the explosives coming in if he said they were already here.

........ The best solution Pryauth has is to put boots...lot's of em on border patrol duty...backed up by "good" intel

and the latter may be difficult to procure.

Lots of boots on the ground. Constant patrolling and Observation Posts coupled with random (Snap) Vehicle Check Points stops the bad boys from moving, disrupts the supply of weapons and bombs, builds up the intelligence picture and, if done sensitively helps gain the support of the local population. It worked for the British in Malaya and in Northern Ireland. With their large underemployed conscript army, in theory Thailand has the resources to do it.

The trouble is that it is not glamorous, takes time and effort to establish and maintain, and there is no money to be made from it. It requires effective leadership, command and control at lower levels (Battalion, Company and Platoon), and well led and motivated soldiers. For all these reasons the Generals of the Royal Thai Army will never even consider it.

All good points but they should be through out the whole southern provinces. The borders are not the source of the bombs those Thailand has an ample stock of. The border is used to flee arrest on Thailand. Then they come back in when ever they have a attack planned and do their thing before returning to Malaysia.

just allocate another 300 billion baht for the construction of it, or is that not enough for everybody to share ?

Thanks for that - at least somebody on here grasped the real reason why he wants to built a wall / fence!

He is on his way out - all the billions they have stolen after the coup are not enough they need some more "retirement money".
