Three men were shot, and one, a foreigner, fatally wounded, in a bar fight in Bangkok this week.

BANGKOK: -- Police and emergency services were called to the Spicey Pub in the Phathumwan area of the city in response to reports of a gunfight, and treated 33 year old Esam Ali Elhamadi, and two local nationals who had also been shot.

All three were taken to hospital but medical teams were unable to save the Libyan national.

Witnesses report that the two local nationals were simply innocent bystanders, uninvolved in the fight which broke out between a group of foreigners and local men in the bar.

As the fight escalated, so a Thai man drew a gun and fired, fatally wounding the Libyan and at the same time hitting the two other men. [more...]

1) Not everyone, but many, many Thai men carry guns around.

2) I'm not sure how long you have been in Thailand, but 'consequence' , along with 'responsibility' are two concepts that are completely alien to most Thai men. Couple that with the extreme loss of face that

would come from losing a fight to a foreigner, and you have the proverbial time bomb.

My Thai girlfriend bought me a small and easily hidden razor cutter, the kind kids have in their stationary bags to cut paper. No explanation but she DID think I should always carry it. I don't but I might start. Perhaps the Libyan didn't realize that Thailand is such a dangerous place and he should have been armed himself.

2 weeks ago I was in a new coffee shop in the new gas station and chatting with an old guy. His family was with him. He asked if I speak Thai and I said that I speak a little. Then, out of the blue, he said, "you know people around here don't like foreigners." His daughter/granddaughter understood and turned bright red. My response was quite Asian, I nodded and said, "I see," and then excused myself and left.

"Every time there is a fight"?? More like "every time there is a fight that ends in gun play, it ends up in the news"... You can be sure that there are 100s of fights across the country every night and in the vast majority, no firearms are involved. These are the ones you will not read about. It's logic like yours that creates and reinforces stereotypes. [Just like Thais may have a stereotype that farangs tend to be drunk, obnoxious, and violent or that the older ones are all pedophiles because these are the guys that make it to the news.]

A tragic accident. The Arab was almost certainly lost and had stopped to ask directions. Everybody knows that Arabs do not frequent bars that serve alcohol and have scantily clad tarts everywhere.

A Muslim in a bar.. a girly bar.. Nah can't be true. Unless of course he's like the millions of other hypocritical Muslims around the World. Maybe the Thai shooter had seen the news from the UK about the two folk from the religion of peace who hacked a young father to death and he was practicing good self-defence. Give him a few hundred thousand baht together with a big thank you and let him jog on.

There are Christians there and plenty of people who were born muslim but don't practice it... But the fact remains that there has been NO mention of his religious beliefs anywhere in this story. So you think foreigners should avoid all bars and discos in Thailand as there will be Thai males in all of them? If you came to Thailand you would find that most Thai males are perfectly decent people, even those that frequent or work in bars.
