His defence lawyer will start out by saying 'The real crime here is what Teachers are paid in Thailand!' tongue.png

Given the syntax in his "note," I'd say whatever he was paid was overly generous, although I suppose he could claim he was writing Pidgin.

I'm sure the note was made to look like it wasn't him nor his writing. Duh.

BTW, bash the yanks if you come from a small socialist country on the brink of collapse & have gotten a lot of US aid over the course of the past few decades (or would otherwise be speaking German right now).

Here we go again............. another one who believes Hollywood's version of history. I don't bash my American friends or their country. But I don't limit my historical research to Hollywood either.

As for this teacher - who knows what drove him to rob a bank? But chances are his mind was not working straight when he wrote the note, hence the mixture of upper and lower case.

Interesting that he isn't allowed bail - "because violence was used". He said he had a knife and gun but didn't actually hurt anyone, other than scaring them. Now if he'd shot a few he'd presumably be allowed bail like the several cases involving Thai policemen or treated nicely like the two Aussie tattoo gunment.

The law here certainly works differently.

I have never had a high opinion of English Teachers in Thailand but this chap is barely literate in the language.

How on earth could someone like this get a job teaching?!

Patrick

Just because I take a first aid course that doesn't make me a doctor. In the same way taking a 12 week TESOL course doesn't make you a teacher. They're just a warm body with a white face and a pulse in a room full of students.

Here comes the Thai defense

"Your excellency, my client just notified the branch of the bank that he has a gun ... in the US ... and a knife. He only asked for reimbursement of his expenses for delivering the memo. My client even thinks the teller is stupid to give him such a generous large amount for delivering the memo. The teller gave him the money in a kind of envelope as requested, a Thai custom, so my client couldn't see the amount. He would have returned most of it right away, he thinks it was to much and not appropriate. My client is honest your excellency, and doesn't lie. He's a law abiding citizen both in the USA and here in Thailand and edited the memo in a way to match the comprehensiveness of English language in our country " tongue.png

Not sure at this point who deserves the Darwin award for 2013, the teller or the alleged robber?

Are you sure a pulse is required?

Speaks volumes for American english teachers.

Here we go.

Ya..., let's ask the better question here; how many English speaking "teachers" here do you know that actually got their BAs in English or Education? It's a miserable joke when considering the numbers. Fact is many come with best of intentions and try to become educators. Many others come for "the party" and have no business even walking back into classroom, let alone as the teacher. It's a travesty.

Just a tongue in cheek comment no offence intended. It is funny having a note written like this and it turns out to be an english teacher. Being American is just a bonus for jokes.

He may have written it like that to deliberately put people of the cent.

Not funny if you happen to be paying for English lessons from him.

An armed robber wouldn't get bail in most countries, so I don't think Thailand is any different. I don't know what the penalties are for Armed Robbery in Thailand but this guy could be looking at a very long stretch in the Hilton.

Ummm .... I'm more worried he robs bank spare time than his literacy rate!

What a tragic shame his students will be deprived of having a teacher so dedicated to educating them that he robbed a bank in order to stay because he wasn't being paid a decent wage. That sort of self-sacrificing devotion to teaching is rare.

Well, his students will be deprived of having a teacher so badly educated that he couldn't write English properly and he was so self-centred that he thought he had the right to threaten, commit armed robbery and steal money belonging to others.

You are right, that kind of self-sacrificing devotion is, thankfully, very rare.

350,000 baht is a pretty good haul for a 'note job'. In the USA, the average note job only scores around 2,000 USD (60,000 baht). Wouldn't be surprised if more bank robbers start showing up on Thai soil after this 'advertisement'.

Mate, he used simplified English to get the message across. The last thing you want during a robbery is getting into a 'lost in translation' argument! ;-)

What about the Thai policemen who were sentenced to death for murder, then given bail? What are the chances of them still being in the country?

Its only a "good" haul if you don't get caught smile.png Might as well be 10,000,000,000 if you get caught and leave the cash lying round your apartment.

But yeah, security is often for "show" in Thai banks. The ones I have seen have 4-digit access codes to the "back office" instead of any proper id-based security. I stood there at the counter watching a lady hit 1-2-3-4, doh!!

It could also be possible he delibeately wrote the note like this to make it look like someone who was not an native English speaker? just a thought?

I am reminded of Woody Allen film "Take the Money and Run" where he presents the teller with a note saying "I have a gub".

LOL!! You did not notice the Youtube clip I posted minutes before you..

One man loses the plot and now it's bash all Yanks.

Pathetic.

It's about time we had a genuine 'murcan miscreant to play with. Makes a change from the usual tattooed Brit chav or the Aussie muaythai <deleted>.

Suck it up!

This is an amusing story, and I laughed at the jokes made just as much as most here, but one thing, lets spare a thought for the young bank teller girls who were threatened by this idiot. They were handed a note that said a gun and knife were pointed at them. This is shocking and disturbing. If we can imagine our wife or daughter was in their place we would see the grim side to this robbery.

Did you perhaps mean satang?

Or "off the scent".

Listening to the news on Televison this morning, my long haired translator (wife app) said that he had 2 or 3 wives/girlfriends and liked to gamble and go to go go bars ( the latter, the wife app, has banned me from....lol)

Can't see anything about this on the original news report, any Thai speakers pick this up n the news???

Interesting to know what motivated him to do such a stupid thing, as on paper being a teacher, should have more sense.

PS I would like a job......which school was it??? As there appears to be a vacancy (shame I'm not a teacher)

Apply for the job, you'll probably get it. He wasn't a qualified teacher either more than likely.
