A friend is opening a bar this week and I've never been to a bar opening. I figure I'll buy him a few drinks and wish him good luck. I'll try to remember not to eat all the free food. Is there anything else that I should do or bring him? (2,000,000 baht maybe? Haha). Thank you.

The opening party is designed for you to spend money on drinks... nothing more and nothing less!

If he puts a buffet on then don't treat it as an all you can eat buffet, take a modest amount of food and make sure your bill is at least 500 baht. perhaps even buy a few lady drinks on top if you can afford it.

There are the famous baloon chasers in Pattaya who will spend 50 baht on a soda water and eat 200 bahts worth of buffet... just make sure you are not seen to be in that category!

^^ Exactly. Stroll on, how old are you anyway? Just get in there and buy a few beers, no need to keep shouting him or feel obliged to spend the night.

I recommend....

1, A smartish dress code.

2, A VIP lane outside.

3, 1st glass of cheap bubbly free.

4, A cool DJ playing ambient sounds at a moderate volume.

5, A local dignitary opening the night by cutting the entrance ribbon.

6, Advertise!!! Flyers, local radio etc

7, oh and make sure you get pissed, get off with his bird and puke all over.

8, Remember- You know it's been a good night when you carn't remember. Enjoy!

Then again, he probaly knows all this already. So don't pee on his parade.

Depends if he is the only one there. biggrin.png

The bars not in lower sukhumvit or a tourist place is it ?

Its your mates show! The opening is for him to show his wares, not for the customers to pamper him.

Treat it as a normal visit to the pub, with a few free drinks and food thrown in.

Its a bar and he is your mate... get pissed with him

Annnnd !!!! ... he will need the 2,000,000 THB gift of yours as he sees the bar eat away at his money whistling.gif

IT SHOULD BE OBVIOUS! You go to the opening, buy a few drinks and maybe a drink for your friend and wish him well. What more do you think is expected? As others have said, don't pig out on the food and just generally be friendly to everyone so people enjoy themselves..

Not sure how close a friend this is...

Maybe ask him if there is anything you can do to help?

Bring a lotus flower garland.

Maybe bring a camera and take pictures, then give some to him, maybe one framed so he can hang it in the bar?

Ring the bell?

Tell Thaivisa where it is and more people will pop into it, either at the opening or some other time then your friend has more business...

Someone finally got the hint. biggrin.pngtongue.png

If it's 300B vodkas I doubt many will. coffee1.gif

if he is a good friend and not just a drink buddy i would buy him a bottle of whiskey or something like that so if you dont all drink it then he can at least sell it from behind bar .

enjoy

PS....yea just ring the bell clap2.gif

(Note to myself - If ever you open a bar in Thailand, DO NOT invite Chicog to the opening !)

Don't lend him any cash when it all goes horribly wrong.

Great advice.Or 2000 for a week ok.A month later 5000,ok he paid you back before.A month later 50000 only for a week, thats the one you never get back

Perhaps this is why bars fail in Thailand, too many folk going to bars and

  • getting pissed, smashing the place up
  • bringing ladyboys and comparing Johnson's at the bar
  • getting off with owner's mrs'
  • Spewing up all over the place
  • eating all their free food

Still it could be worse - he could be opening the world's first bar/cafe in a poultry farm...thumbsup.gif

Take four friends, tell him that it looks like a gold mine and offer to buy a 25% share in two months time. At the end of the two months tell him that you've found another place that he should buy 25% of and make sure you have some place to hide. Meanwhile you may have been drinking with a good discount.
