Don't knock the guy for having a go! Rent isn't exactly expensive compared to say Pattaya, The police benevolent fund is about 13K a month... I'm stuck up in Korat where my local bar has the typical awful Thai band drowning out all reasonable conversation..

Good luck to the guy, I'm sure he is not expecting to get rich out of it, we all need something to do!

^^ Exactly. Stroll on, how old are you anyway? Just get in there and buy a few beers, no need to keep shouting him or feel obliged to spend the night.

'Stroll On'....luv it..!..haven't heard or used that expression for 30 + years...thank you !

Take a wreath, the bar won't last more than a week in Udon.

If it's anything like Mr Tongs it will be a good little earner, no bar girls just expensive drink loud music and packed every night by Thai's and Westerners. If it's a girly bar then I agree, theres not enough mongers in Udon to keep them all busy.

Turn up - get pissed - throw up - go home. How difficult can it be?

You forgot piss on the toilet seat and write I WAZ ERE on the back of the toilet door

It is not in Udon, it is in Pattaya amongst a row of generic bars. I went down the street yesterday but could not see the bar from the street so maybe it's in the 2nd row away from the street. I think it's a tough sell but let's hope for the best.

only attend if it has free wifi, so you can join all the other unsociable pricks who bury their heads in their smart phones and tablets pretending to be chic, intelligent, important and indispensable.

The last guy I knew who bought not one but TWO second row bars in Pattaya hung himself from a pipe on his second floor balcony.

Drink the place dry and eat all his free food. Send the bloke broke as quickly as possible. Nothing more compassionate than putting down a bad business idea as quickly and humanely as possible.

The opening party is designed for you to spend money on drinks... nothing more and nothing less!

If he puts a buffet on then don't treat it as an all you can eat buffet, take a modest amount of food and make sure your bill is at least 500 baht. perhaps even buy a few lady drinks on top if you can afford it.

There are the famous baloon chasers in Pattaya who will spend 50 baht on a soda water and eat 200 bahts worth of buffet... just make sure you are not seen to be in that category!

For some crazy reason i always though opening party was to show off the place, get people drunk and make them have a good time, so they will come back as paying customers in the future.

I guess you and i know different people or get invited to different parties.

Perhaps yours was a charity?!

OP, all you need to do is come to the party, bring as many friends as possible, drink and eat as much as you wish and mingle.

The happier the place looks the more likely it is to be successful.

Bar is a tough business anywhere in the world.

SO many come here and open bars because they believe they have been drinking in one for decades they know the business.

Then to top it all up is the staff issues, police and everything else.

One really need to know the biz inside out to compete with locals who do not pay any tax, hardly pay the minimum wages and happy to just break even

8 years living in Pattaya, taught me a lot about balloon chasers! LOL, motorbike taxis that I was friendly with have told me about farangs that would have them drive round the soi's looking for such a party!

The question was about etiquette, the guys opening a bar and laying on free food.. but many will simply see it a cheap meal ticket..

Let's be realistic, people don't generally move to Udon Thani to party do they? If they were party animals they wouldn't have left Bangkok or Pattaya..

But you are absolutely correct, it is about making people aware of your business.. How much he spends on freebies is up to him, but he may never see most of the people again!

I spent a night in Mr Tongs bar only a few weeks ago whilst on a sojourn to Udon, full of freelancers and expensive drinks, but only 5 farangs all night.

how long time do we give the guy before he sells and fly home broke 555

open a bar in low season wow..

That's when it is the cheapest and gives you plenty of time to refine your product, but we are talking Udon Thani here not Pattaya.. Low season is a Pattaya/Bangkok thing whereas Udon is usually more expat orientated and all year round.

Just hang on to the money and give it to him in 6 months when he will really need it.........WOW! A bar in Pattaya, thats original.
