PHUKET: -- Police barely have their shoe in the door for a case against a pair of snatch thieves after a botched attempt to grab an Irish woman’s purse led to a motorbike crash and a lost flip flop.

Hannah Louise O’Hagan, 27, was driving a motorbike to her boyfriend’s place at Baan Term Fun Housing Estate yesterday evening after a trip to Tesco Lotus when two men on a motorbike started following her, said Preecha Rakjan of the Thalang Police.

The two men pulled up next to Ms O’Hagan and attempted to rip her bag from her shoulder – the Irish woman fought back, causing the bikes to collide and sending all three of them to the ground.

“One of the thieves, as well as Ms O’Hagan, lost a flip flop during the accident. When the two men stood up to escape toward Baan Bang Jo, one of them accidentally grabbed Ms O’Hagan’s slipper, leaving behind his own,” Lt Preecha said.

“When we arrived at the scene at 8:30pm she was standing next to her motorbike looking very pale,” Lt Preecha said.

At the scene police found Ms O’Hagan’s brown leather bag, two unmatched flip flops and a crowd of local residents attempting to assist the Irish woman in contacting her boyfriend.

“I didn’t have a chance to see their faces, because they came from behind me and it was too dark, everything happened too fast. I was shocked,” Ms O’Hagan told police.

With no CCTV footage of the incident and no witnesses, police are stuck with finding a foot that matches the flop flop of the "Cinderella" snatch thief.

“Even though the two men did not get away with the crime, they did attempt the robbery. We will find them and charge them with attempted robbery at night while using a motorbike. However, at this stage we only have the shoe as evidence,” Lt Preecha said.

Teen assailant leaves ID at failed Phuket bag snatching
Tanyaluk Sakoot

PHUKET: Thalang policemen yesterday evening (June 6) arrested a Thai teenager for attempting to snatch a handbag from an Irish expatriate.

The scene of the attempted bag snatching in Baan Manik.
Their job was made easier by the teen helpfully dropping the registration book for his bike at the scene of the robbery attempt.

Hannah Louise O’Hagan, 27, was riding her motorbike home to Baan Term Fun village in Baan Manik about 7 pm.

She almost reached the entrance when another motorbike with two youngsters on board came close alongside and both bikes crashed.

Ms O’Hagan refused to yield her handbag and the teenagers gave up and drove off. Ms O’Hagan was only slightly injured in the attack.

The Deputy Superintendent of Thalang Police Station, Pol Lt Col Amnuay Kraiwutthianun, told The Phuket News, “Officers found the motorbike registration book on the ground near the attempted snatching, so it was a simple matter to find and arrest the 17-year-old.

“Our investigators are now trying to identify the other perpetrator.”

He denied that a knife had been used by the teenagers in the attempted robbery.

A kid on the back of a scooter tried to hook my camera strap but I held on. I weigh 115k - he came straight of the back of the scooter and smacked down. Out cold for a minute - his pal took off. He was a pretty sick laddie. Everyone around thought it was pretty funny, locals as well.

Otherwise they would have to use scientific methods such as DNA from the shoe, and that would be totally unreasonable to expect.....

it seems bag snatching is a common practice in phuket nowadays ...Maybe the bright TAT should warn tourists on their arrival.

Becoming a crime victim is simply part of appreciating the full richness of Thai culture as the Temples and food get old.
