Sorry don't know if this should be plant or farming subject !

Have a huge clump of bamboo which has flowered and now in the process of dying as it normally does when flowered. Someone said if you cut it back it will regrow after a while. Anyone have experience of this.

Its 4-5 m wide clump . Have to check on type not sure!

Forget about it and plant another bamboo variety. Most die after blooming although I have been able to get clumps to live for a year or two more by cutting the flowering shoots back.

Oh well , flowers were well established by the time I saw them - like 3 storeys high!

Most of our clumps are different varieties so better look for the same thing to plant again !

Chiang Mai name is Mai Huak (sp??)

Bamboos everywhere have a tendency to bloom, per variety, in the same time period (2-5 years) and then die. If you do find the same bamboo again it may well bloom in a few years. You can harvest seeds of course, some of the progeny will be improved versions of the parents but you will need 5- 10 years to find out.

One of the most popular species in Europe (Fargesia) bloomed all over the world and died in the 90ies, the original strain has disappeared to be replaced by new varieties. Fargesia bloom once in 120 years....

"Mai Huak" = ไผ่ฮวก (phai huak), a Chiang Mai name for Thyrsostachys siamensis. Plants of this commonly distributed bamboo species can occasionally be found in flower. If you bring me seeds, I will give you non-flowering plants in exchange.

Thank you for your kind offer. It actually turns out to be Phai Hia and not Huak - one clump the 2 have got mixed up.

We still have all the Phai Huak . Nothing else has flowered only the Phai Hia.

Any idea where I can get some more?

I might be able to salvage some seeds. Do they stay attached to the flowers after they have dried?

Thanks for the suggestion, but I imagine the penalty for pinching one of the pandas from CM zoo in the night is pretty hefty!

I can see it now - a panda climbing to the top of the taller bamboo near my front gate, and swaying gently to and fro.

Then the arrival of the entire CM police force with TV channels in tow. crying.gif
