PHUKET: -- Three vehicles were destroyed by fire early this morning (June 11) outside the Baan Manik offices of Tropical Landscaping International, and police have confirmed that the attack was arson.

Pol Maj Kittipoom Tinthalang of Thalang Police Station, who is in charge of the case, told The Phuket News this afternoon, “The evidence tells us that it was arson.

“As to who did it or why, we are still investigating.”

Australian Ben Davis, TLI’s head consultant for Asia-Pacific, told The Phuket News he learned about the fire at 2 am.

“If it was [arson], then we’re sure it was nothing to do with TLI. We think it might be another matter that I can’t really comment on.”

Asked whether it might be an indication of tough competition in the landscaping industry, he joked, “No, we’re not at pistols at 10 paces yet.” He added, “It seems to be an unrelated property matter.”

The fire destroyed two trucks belonging to the company, along with a third vehicle from a neighbouring company, which was parked close by.

Mr Davis confirmed that the fire had started in one of TLI’s trucks, but said it would have little effect on the business. “We’re just going to have to buy another couple of trucks. They were brand new, too; one’s one month old and the other’s three months old.

“We had a bit of a reshuffle of resources this morning. My car’s gone to the people who are doing the work.”

TLI set up in Phuket in 2006 and has projects in Vietnam. It is also currently pursuing business in Myanmar.

Phuket clients include the Alan Cooke Cricket Ground, Anantara Vacation Club, Blue Canyon, Cape Sol and Cape Yamu, Kata Rocks, Trisara and Waterfall Cove.

TLI has also done work for the US Embassy in Yangon, The Angsana Hotel & Resort in Vietnam, and many others.
