Phuket tipped as venue for first Thai GP

FORMULA ONE: -- Phuket is likely to be the venue for Thailand's first Formula One race in 2015, Tourism and Sports Minister Somsak Pureesrisak said yesterday.

The ministry has scrapped the plan to hold the event at Ratchadamnoen Avenue after protests by environmentalists and residents, he said.

It is also against the law to organise a motor racing event in inner Bangkok, according to Somsak.

"I can confirm that we cannot hold a Grand Prix on Ratchadamnoen Avenue," he said.

"The law, which took effect last month, prohibits a car racing event in inner Bangkok."

The ministry will try to organise the race in other provinces such as Phuket, he said.

"Phuket should be an ideal venue which meets our target to promote tourism," Somsak said.

"We still have time to prepare for the race."

Somsak said Khon Kaen or Nakhon Ratchasima may not be a suitable site because they lack accommodation and facilities to house hundreds of people during the Grand Prix.

Seems that they are planing rather small size F1 race.

Can anyone suggest a suitable street circuit here in Phuket? One without too many hills and roads that are surfaced properly with sufficient open space to accommodate spectators, cars, a pit lane and that is sufficiently accessible for the "hundreds" of spectators?

Street circuit.. Possibly Saphan Hin with lot's of modifications.

Otherwise there is still plenty of space in Thalang to build an circuit.

The year of first Phuket GP would be 2025. At that time, there is F1 52 GP's annually.

After Rattanakosin ban, search for F1 site widens

BANGKOK: -- Rattanakosin Island would not be used to host a Formula One race, and organisers would have to search elsewhere for a site to host the country's first F1 race in 2015.

Tourism Minister Somsak Phurisisak said that the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration issued a law on May 16 which prohibits car racing in historic Rattanakosin, where organisers had wanted to locate the F1 circuit.

He added that efforts to launch a Thailand Formula One Grand Prix would not cease as the committee would look for a new site, focusing their search in the Chaengwattana Government Office Complex and Muang Thong Thani areas of the capital. "In fact many cities have shown an interest in hosting the race. We have no plans to build a stadium, as the circuit is expected to run through cultural sites," Somsak said.

"We have no plans to build a stadium, as the circuit is expected to run through cultural sites,"

Only people standing along the road? Very interesting with cars passing by at 60 or more km/h. Hardly ever seen in Bangkok. Mind you, not really interesting as, zhouf, all just passed. Must be a televised event then to make it worthwhile for anyone.

BTW now 12th of June, 2013. How much time is needed for decision on allowing a F1 race in Thailand, planning for the event, work on circuit, rails/guards, emergency posts, etc., etc.? Isn't 2015 getting a wee bit optimistic?

Better question is how much can be milked out of the system for studies and location visits?
