Extra-low tide creates ocean of sand on Jomtien Beach

PATTAYA:--There’s low tide; there’s really low tide; and then there’s what has been happening at Jomtien Beach the past two weeks.

A combination of seasonal tides and lunar cycles has been turning Jomtien into an ocean of sand during low tide. Water receded as much as 70 meters from shore, exposing crabs, clams and other sea life normally covered by salty waves.

The sight has drawn more than a few curious tourists.

Somsak Ninduang said the ripples in the sand left by the retreating waters reminds him of a beautiful long wave. He said the sand lake is full of life, including small fish marooned in puddles waiting for the tide to return.
