I first went to the Dungeon (Stamford Street Nottingham) when I was 15. The night that the Drifters were on the place got raided by the law so we all went to the Beachcomber in the Lace Market and watched Lee Dorsey instead biggrin.png

Saw John Mayall's Bluesbreakers with Clapton at the Beachcomber.

Used to go to all-nighters at Pete Stringfellow's King Mojo in Sheffield

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/King_Mojo_Club

Saw Wilson Pickett, Stevie Wonder (we had a chat with him while he was waiting to go on stage), Geno Washington, Don Covay, Ike & Tina Turner and loads of others.

It started to get a bit too psychedelic for my two tone mohair suit so I started going to the Twisted Wheel on Whitworth Street for a couple of years.

By the time that Wigan really kicked off I was too old laugh.png

I recently went to a 'Northern Soul revival night' in my Midlands town. Apart from the fact that it was full of old blokes with no hair (w00t.gif ) the one thing that was really noticeable was the number of 'rare' records that were played.

I have to say it was nothing like a night at the Dungeon/Beachcomber/Mojo/Wheel. We didn't go there to listen to rare records. We went there to meet our mates from all over the country and listen to music that made our eyes light up and our hearts race.

I went to the Dungeon during the week that the Four Tops released 'Reach Out'. It was played every 10 minutes all night long but you'd never realise it if you went to a NS revival night nowadays.

NS has become a bit too precious. If the music doesn't lift you to your feet it ain't NS.

I agree the more well known Motown and Wigan classics are why everyone got into the scene.

As the scene progressed for many it was to search out the rarer more obscure tunes from the thousands of small independent American labels.

If the scene didn't progress it would have become extinct!

That's why there are so many different soul nights on around the world from Oldies to Newies to 70's to Rythm and Soul.

Check out soul-source website there is tons of info on there.

The trouble with the scene is not enough young blood coming through!

Some events look like a pensioners night which is of putting for the young soulie or newbie on the scene.

The Mod scene in the U.K is still attracting a younger crowd which is important for the scene to stay healthy and not stagnate.

That's really sad.

What you can't see from that video is Whitworth Street police station which is directly opposite the Wheel. I've had some lairy Saturday nights in there laugh.png

It's amazing the Wheel kept open for so long, rubbing the police's noses in it.

Did you meet any of the Wheel DJ's?

The Manchester DS were ok actually. While the Wheel was open they knew where everybody who they were interested was. It was all a big game to them (and us). They'd come over through the night on Saturdays to get a drink. They'd always have a chat to us and make sure we were ok. I was a bit over enthusiastic with the recreationals one Saturday night and finished up in Manchester Infirmary. The DS in charge came up on the Monday afternoon and made sure I was ok when I was discharged and that I'd got enough money to get home. Good bloke!

I used to speak to the DJs most weeks asking for records to be played but they weren't famous then. They were just the guys who played the records. Their fame has grown since the place closed tongue.png

I was part of the second generation of that revived in the 80's.

Still friends with some of the original DJ's/ promoters who kept the scene going and alive albiet not as high profile through the 80's/90's.

I started out in 1964 and carried on until about 1972ish when I got a place at college to study radio and stuff. Went into the Merchant Navy in 1975 and spent the next 10 years away from the UK so the revival pretty much passed me by. I have to say that NS was a very big part of my life and I don't regret a minute of it even though I had a few scrapes laugh.png
