  2. is there abundant cheap accomodation somewhere?
  3. transport scams ? songthews? out of the airport a problem?
  4. getting to the border itself a problem?
  5. anything else of note.

just dont fancy sitting in a mini taxi or bus or whatever for hours on backroads to mae sai and back.

1. 500 Baht will get you a post-it note you can use to get your passport back when you are ready to return to Thailand, or you can ask to return directly, whole 'take picture, stamp in, stamp out, pay, wave goodbye' process takes about 5 minutes

2. Plenty of hotels in Mae Sot, starting at a couple 100 Baht (i.e. Pornthep hotel in center)

3. Airport is at (a stiff) walking distance to the border, can ask info desk to get you a taxi or motorcycle at nominal cost

4. see 3. If you want to walk, turn left outside the airport, border is around 2KM away.

5. Easiest and least crowded border in Thailand, you will most likely be the only foreigner (except for the Burmese but they have their own (long) queues) There is a Burmese / Chinese gadget market at the Thai side that may be interesting to visit, and a Burmese market at the Burmese side that is not.
