Can u recommend a restaurant in CM that meets these criteria?

-Suitable for a bit of romance (ie not lit up like a football stadium)

-Doesn't look like it's trying to impress

-Music so you can hold a conversation without shouting

-easygoing and comfortable

On the river would be a bonus.

Palad tawan ron up the mountainside at the end of Suthep Road, not riverside but a nice view.

Also a great restaurant across the road from Promenada, over a lake not a river but excellent food and good value in a nice setting.

Also the riverside on the outside terrace might do the trick. It can get louder the later you are there, but outside isn't too bad. Dukes is nice but think that the lights are very bright and I don't recall any tables set apart for more romantic setting.

I too recommend Palad tawan ron, or Ga lah, up on suthep road overlooks a small reservoir.

try comedara , same street as riverside and good view but further down just before the traffic lights at rimping condo , i like the food there better than riverside or goodview and they have a band playing but its more like background music not too loud

All of these photos were taken inside the restaurant, and they don't do it justice. I believe it closes at 10.00pm though so be careful about timings.

Dukes by the river seems to fit your requirements.

I've gone off the Dukes. Recently, every time I order my favorite soup and ribs, the soup comes at the same time as the ribs. You would expect that service in a Thai restaurant but not a western run establishment. I tell them to bring me the ribs when I've finished the soup, when the ribs duly arrive they are dry as a bone.

There appears to be a lot of new staff at the Dukes, have the older staff been shipped over to his new place across the river?

I would enthusiastically second thaiscot's recommendation of Comedara, on the east bank of the river, just south of the Nakorn Ping Bridge. They've had some understated live music every time I've been there, the setting is lovely, and the food (particularly the Northern specialties) is exceptional!

A bit further upstream (and on the opposite bank) is another of our favorites: Paak Dang. This place is right on the west bank of the Ping, it's probably more "romantic" than the others mentioned so far, and also has tastefully subdued live music most nights. Very good Thai standard cuisine, with a slight lean towards Isaan. It's on Wang Sing Kham, north of the Rama lX bridge, very near Ten Karaoke, and they've got parking across the street. Map on their website:

That Khaomao Khaofang place looks intriguing, but after following both of the provided links, I still don't know where it's located.

Can anybody point me in the right direction?

Thanks!

I recommend the Tuang Tong or Wang Tong Thai restaurant in Hang Dong.

They have discrete not in your ears opera type background singers, situated on grounds next to a lake with swans and exotic birds (the feathered varieties), candle lit open air tables, smashing grub and not expensive,

Take your girl there and I guarantee she will be lusting for your attention within minutes after leaving the restaurant.

Opening times: 11:00-22:00 daily

About 2 kms past BigC on Hang Dong road south of the Airport. Turn right at the 3 way red light intersection going to Ratchpeuk Flower Garden then need to U-turn back toward Hang Dong road.

No river, but lake & waterfalls. Will need transport as around 6kms south of town.

Beautiful setting.

Food nothing special.

I have to agree. I took my wife and son there last month, and although I was impressed by the setting, the food was terrible. I certainly won't be going again.

Thanam Restaurant on the river is great and it doesn't look like they are trying to impress but your company might be impressed.

Merlin2002, the way I get around having my courses delivered with the timing to my liking is to order the first course first and then the second afterwards depending on the cooking time and how quick the kitchen is taking into account how busy the dining room is etc. One might have to know the establishment a bit to figure it out and perhaps not be in a rush but it works for me here and in other countries.

Cannot remember the name, but there is an upmarket white painted detached restaurant off Nimmaheiman.... Italian. Has parking. Good food. Maybe some one else knows it.

The best fish restaurant in CM is Behind Wat Jed Yod.... Again fits your criteria. Not many farang know this one. It is well hidden away.

Up towards the university, MoC MoL ..... On the left hand side. A bit HiSo but good food and no music until later in the evening. Great setting

I love reading directions posted on various threads. All clear as mud.

As Joni Mitchell sang;

'They paved paradise and put up a parking lot'

Isn't it true?.... 'you don't know what you've got til it's gone'.

Couldn't agree more. It's also boring as hell. It's all quiet other than the soft music and feels like a place where all fun and happiness has been banned.

But if one has a shallow woman who needs to be impressed by a guy appearing to be hi-so (which is the overwhelming majority of Thai women that farang men will meet [Edit: note I did not say that most thai women, but rather most thai women that farang here will meet]), then that is the place. The food is a 5/10, so won't make you puke or anything.

Food not very special and decor horrible, why go to a place with fake everything mimicking all the real beautiful everything that is here already. Now if it had snow falling and you sit in igloos that might be worth a visit!

Thanks for the (perfectly clear) directions, and especially for the maps!

After seeing the entrance to the place in "street view", I realized that I'd been there before, trying to find the entrance to the moo baan behind the restaurant.

Despite the largely unfavorable reviews in this thread, I think that my shallow woman and her shallow husband will be heading there soon, if only to see what a place "where all fun and happiness has been banned" might feel like.

Fortunately, we're not much for conversation, so I'll consider the deafening waterfall (in a room otherwise "all quiet other than the soft music") a bonus!smile.png

Was worried then! Just checked, they filled in the lake next to the mosquito infested brothel of a karaoke/restaurant closer to Wat Don Chan, the one I mean is at the lights where the road to San Kamphaeng hot springs meets the middle ring road, south west corner.

And just how do you know the brothel is mosquito-infested? smile.png
