MEA shows off electric car recharging station at auto show

BANGKOK, 21 June 2013 (NNT) – The Metropolitan Electricity Authority (MEA) is displaying its electric cars and car recharging station technology to visitors at the Bangkok International Auto Salon 2013 to promote its drive to reduce pollution.

The MEA has already opened the country's first electric car recharging station in Bangkok, and plans to open 9 additional stations within this year to bring the total number to 10 and increase coverage to include Nonthaburi and Samutprakan provinces.

According to the MEA staff, the electric cars and recharging station model on display at the auto show is aimed at promoting the electric car market in Thailand. The staff explained that electric cars had a fuel consumption rate of 69 satang per kilometer traveled, compared with the 3 baht per kilometer rate for petrol-driven cars. Electric cars are suitable for short-distance travels within 1 kilometer, and can help reduce pollution significantly.

The Nation

BANGKOK: -- The National Anti-Corruption Commission has postponed its decision on corruption allegations against former public health minister Sudarat Keyuraphan to Tuesday.

NACC commissioner and spokesman Klanarong Chanthik said the decision was delayed because Sudarat had submitted new evidence.

She was held responsible for alleged irregularities in the procurement of computers worth Bt821 million.

Klanarong said an NACC subcommittee investigated the case and recommended that the commission pursue charges against some senior officials. He explained that the investigation had taken several years because the NACC needed to consider all the evidence available.

MEA 'acted legally' in cutting power to mall
The Nation

BANGKOK: -- Metropolitan Electricity Authority (MEA) union leader Pian Yongnu yesterday insisted the agency's cutting of the power supply to Imperial World Mall's Lat Phrao branch was legal.

Pian said the mall owed Bt15 million in overdue power bills from March to May, and had been warned that if it didn't pay up the power would be cut on Wednesday.

An MEA official sent to warn the mall on Monday was "invited to stay and talk" by tenants in the afternoon, while the mall urged the Lat Phrao district electricity office to issue an urgent letter to say there had been a misunderstanding on MEA's part, he said. The office issued the letter for fear that the official would not be allowed to leave. Pian said the office had to issue three such letters before the mall was satisfied and allowed the official to leave the premises after 6.30pm.

As the urgent letters were used to blame the MEA, Pian said the MEA had acted according to legal procedures, adding that by June 19 the mall had paid Bt10 million of the Bt15 million owed.

Minister stands firm on new pledging price of paddy
By English News

BANGKOK, June 21 – Commerce Minister Boonsong Teriyapirom is so far standing firm that the government’s decision to reduce pledging price for paddy by Bt3,000 per tonne will remain unchanged.

The cabinet has decided to slash the rice subsidy from Bt15,000 per tonne to Bt12,000 per tonne, effective June 30, and set the ceiling for rice purchases at Bt500,000 from each farming household.

The commerce minister’s insistence came on the heels of protests in a number of provinces by farmers against the government’s decision.

The prime minister has instructed agencies concerned to look into farmers’ rice production costs, including fertiliser and seed, while the Bank of Agriculture and Agricultural Cooperatives will extend loan payment terms and lower interest to farmers, said Mr Boonsong.

The pledging price of Bt12,000 per tonne is for paddy in the 2012/2013 second crop while the price for the 2013/2014 annual harvest season will be decided soon.

The commerce minister said a decision must be made within next month on the new pledging price as farmers will start planting late next month for harvest in early October.

Farmers should know the pledging price before they begin their rice cultivation for the new season, he said, reassuring that the new price will be appropriate and profitable for farmers.

Mr Boonsong welcomed the Thai Chamber of Commerce’s proposal to ask the private sector to help distribute rice from the state stockpiles.

The Foreign Trade Department was also instructed to find ways to release rice from the pledging scheme after several international trading companies have contacted the government to buy the grain, he said. (MCOT online news)
