Major killed in a bomb attack

Officials inspect a large crater caused by a roadside bomb in Pattani that left an Army major dead and five other soldiers injured.

PATTANI: -- A roadside bomb went off in Pattani's Nong Chik district yesterday morning, killing a senior Army officer and wounding five others.

The 20kg home-made bomb, hidden in a pipe underneath a local road in Tambon Bor Thong, went off at around 11am and hit the six-strong "Santisuk" special task force team. They were returning in a pickup truck after a meeting of the Internal Security Operations Command Region 4 Front at the Sirindhorn Camp in Pattani’s Yarang district.

Major Itthipol Khammongkol succumbed to the attack while the injured soldiers - Corporal Santi Tapaopong; Colonel Pornthep Klampasut, Lt-Colonel Thawee Na Chatree; Master Sergeant First Class Chusak Kwan-on and Corporal Kittichai Uttapan were later transferred to Pattani Hospital.

In related news, a team led by National Police chief Pol General Adul Saengsingkaew visited the Southern Border Provinces Police operation centre in Yala's Muang district yesterday to boost police morale as well as check progress into the interrogation of suspects in the bombing at Bangkok's Ramkhamhaeng Soi 43/1. Adul said the investigation had made progress and two suspects were in custody with strong evidence for their prosecution.

Baht to move 30.95-31.30 next week: KResearch

BANGKOK: -- Kasikorn Research Centre expects the baht to move in the range of 30.95-31.30 per US dollar next week.

Last week, the baht hit 31.20, the strongest level since September 2012.

The research house noted that foreign capital flows would remain volatile. Next week, several US economic indicators will be released including the consumer confidence index and new home sales. Thailand’s export figure for May is also due next week.

KResearch expects a rebound in the Thai stock market, which has declined by 10.32 per cent month to date on capital outflows. It expects the SET index to move in the range of 1,380-1,460 points next week.

Three rangers, three civilians injured in Yala bomb attack

Yala - Insurgents detonated a homemade bomb to ambush a unit of rangers, injuring three of them and three civilians Sunday morning.

Police said the explosion occurred at 6:20 am on a road in Moo 3 village of Muang district's Tambon Satengnok.

Six rangers from the 41st Ranger Regiment were traveling in a pick-up truck heading to Yala downtown when insurgents detonated a bomb hidden at a power pole on the road island. The bomb was detonated by a walkie-talkie.

The blast slightly injured three rangers. A Muslim man and his son and daughter, who were standing nearby, were also slightly injured.
