CHIANG MAI: -- Three foreign tourists were injured by gunshots in Chiang Mai after a drunk university student opened fire at a restaurant because a waitress rejected him, police said.

Chiang Mai police on Saturday arrested Don Praweenmeth, a 28-year-old sixth year university student from Bangkok.

Police said Mr Don confessed that he fired five shots from a 9mm handgun in a busy restaurant on Nimanhemin Road at about midnight.

The suspect said he was flirting with the waitress at the restaurant but she rejected him and her boyfriend, who is a foreigner, later assaulted him.

Mr Don said he then bought out the gun from his car and fired it in the restaurant. He fled after the shooting but was later arrested in the morning.

Police said the three injured foreign tourists were named as Nicholas Brown from Canada, Tae-Yon Lee from Korea, and half Thai-Scottish Morris Chaiyawat.

Police charged Mr Don with attempted murder and possession of a firearm in a public area.

CHIANG MAI: -- Police arrested a sixth-year dentistry student for shooting at and injuring three tourists in a heated argument early yesterday.

Phuphing Rajaniwet Police yesterday presented the suspect, Danot Praweenmet, 28, along with a 9mm gun after his arrest in a house on Siroros Road in Tambon Suthep. The Bangkok-native was initially charged for attempted murders, possessing a gun and ammunition without permission and carrying the gun and ammunition to a public place without sound reason.

Danot reportedly shot a Canadian national, Nicolas Brown, a Korean man, Ty Yeon Lee, and Thai-Scott Moris Chaiwat Blake at the Ban Din Restaurant on Soi Nimmanhemin 13 at 12.30am yesterday before fleeing the scene.

Following information from witnesses that the shooter rode a white sedan with car registration plate number "Chor Thor - 6847 Bangkok", the police located the car at 2am at the house. They found one spent bullet in front of the house and another spent bullet inside the car near the driver's seat.

Danot, who surrendered to police and let them search the house at 3am, claimed that he had gone to the restaurant alone and had an argument with the tourists so he walked out and shot several times at the restaurant while he drove past it before going home.

Police investigation found that the suspect was drunk and had flirted with a foreigner waitress there, which upset her boyfriend who assaulted him, leading to the suspect's drive-by shooting.

A modern day 'doc holliday', his problem is no Wyatt nor OK corral. Hopes he gets over the drinking problem before he goes into general practice.

Wonder if they do a piss/breath test prior to letting them open a office to practice on the general public?

There is a Canadian Nicholas Brown who gets a mention in a Chiang Mai online newspaper in an article about hockey and cricket teams in Chiang Mai.

I wish a full recovery to all 3 tourists.

"This article neatly avoids to make it clear that this happened in Chiang Mai." ???

Whether or not the above comment was made tongue in cheek, a bit silly.

The perp's wealthy parents probably stuck him in dentistry school hoping he would last the six years without shooting anyone.

Oh well, there is always Plod, the younger brother.

In developed countries, perpertrators of drive by shootings, any shootings receive a lengthy prison sentence. If the Thai authorities want to reduce the gun crimes committed in Thailand, would they not better impose heavier sentences. A minimum 10 year sentence might've made DR. Fang think twice before he reached for his gun.

Honestly, I don't think long prison terms would make much difference in a case like this. He wasn't weighing up the pros and cons of doing this vs getting caught and going to prison!

Mandatory minimum sentences work against justice in most cases.

What this guy did does deserve punishment of course, but I seriously doubt if his intent was murder, certainly not of the bystanders who got hurt. Of course he must be held responsible, but even a potential death sentence (which I'm opposed to under any circumstances) would not have prevented this.

As is common nowadays in Thailand, the one who will be fined will be the dentistry student. The farang waitress will also be investigated and thrown out of Thailand for doing one of the 17 xenophobic job protection schemes.

Collateral damage by creating another victim is the Thai way to save their face.

I wonder what nationality she is. Did anyone see if the press mentioned.

Burmese? Chinese? Russian? Lisu?
