PRETORIA, SOUTH AFRICA (BNO NEWS) -- The condition of anti-apartheid icon Nelson Mandela, who is being treated at a South African hospital for a recurrence of a lung infection, has worsened and the former leader is now in a critical condition, a government spokesman said on Sunday.

"The condition of former President Nelson Mandela, who is still in hospital in Pretoria, has become critical," presidential spokesman Mac Maharaj said in a statement, adding: "President Zuma has appealed to the nation and the world to pray for Madiba, the family and the medical team that is attending to him during this difficult time."
