Teaching Thais A Scottish Dance

Featured Replies

Right, running commentary.........I've walked in to a college with Mercedes Girl to meet the Thai dance teacher and I've been mugged. There's 40 people here waiting for me to teach them a Scottish dance for a dinner dance tomorrow night. Being a resourceful man, I brought along my laptop and showed them this dance.....

It's a rather aged group here so we had to call 2 ambulances to take away the first casualties......anyway we started again and I showed them this one....

Still too difficult.....so I've had to use that as the basis and bastardise it a little bit.......the good news is no one else has collapsed, I'll report back with further developments.

Oh and the big dinner dance is tomorrow night, this is going to be fun. drunk.gif

If you can get them dancing to this Scottish tune, then I'll turn up, but only if you book the wee lassie to play live

Me too CCC, I'll make a point of getting it tomorrow night. The bad news for the assembled company is that I'm booked as the star turn singer.

I can't believe it, it's going to be a car crash sad.png

That was excellent I like Thai, first I've seen that.......this band are excellent, they have a poignant story, they commemorate the Scots and Irish that fought with the Mexicans at The Alamo.

Anyway, it was good to watch the dance practise today, we'll see how it goes tomorrow night.

Great. Will there be a ceilidh soon? smile.png

That fought with the Mexicans???? There were 4 Scots who helped Davy Crockett fight against the Mexicans, also, there was a Scot from Edinburgh who fought with Custer at the Little Big Horn.

Yup, and there were several Irish and Scots thought fought with the Mexicans against the land grabbers. The real story of the Alamo is an interesting one, and another uncomfortable truth for many Americans.

Don't get me started on that though I got in trouble enough re history last week sad.png

Eh......I suppose I better give you this link, you won't enjoy it though.

That's something else I've learned, I didn't know that some Scottish and Irish fought with the Mexicans, Anyway I am more into Irish history than American history.

Maybe we have a new thread for this... for the time being a little story about bagpipes in Thailand. smile.png

The Great Highland Bagpipe (a' phìob mhòr) was adopted in Thailand; around 1921, King Rama VI ordered a set to accompany the marching exercises of the Sua Pa, or Wild Tiger Corps. This was a royal guard unit which had previously practised to the sounds of an oboe called Pi Chawa.

Although the bagpipes arrived from the British Isles with a user's manual, no one was able to figure out how to play them, so bassoon player Khun Saman Siang-prajak went to the British Embassy and learned how to play the instrument with the British soldiers, and then became instructor to the rest of the Corps. The band, which plays Thai as well as Scottish tunes, still practices at Vachiravuth High School in Bangkok, which is named for Rama VI.

It certainly is an international music now.......and I don't blame the Thais for not being able how to work out how to play using a manual blink.png

A ceilidh in Chiang Mai, now that would be good. smile.png

Not Just American/Mexican history. Here is an excellent blog which relates Irish involvement around the world. I won't post the text from the blog, as I don't want to go off topic.

Isnt it confusing everyone is wearing a dress.. ?

Ah, fond memories of Scottish dance lessons at the British Club in preparation for the St Andrew's ball at the Dusit. Good times!

I seem to remember there were a few Thais at the lessons too.

If I have time I'll teach the dance class how to do the more complex dances, they are fast learners and even better, they are enthusiastic. I'd love to see a ceilidh taking place at some point, and there are three separate dates that would work well.....St Andrews ( Nov 30 ), Hogmanay ( 31 Dec ) and Burns Supper ( 25 Jan ).

I wanted to do a get together last year but the pressure of work ensured I wasn't in Thailand at Christmas. The good thing about this group is that they have a monthly dance anyway, which is well attended, so any event piggy backing on their dance would be sure of a good turnout. That's a start.
