Report Long An Launches Free Rabies Vaccination Campaign for Pets
File photo for reference only In a bid to enhance public health and combat rabies, a dedicated "Rabies Vaccination for the Community" programme has kicked off in Đức Huệ District, Long An Province. Over the next week, the initiative aims to vaccinate 8,500 pet dogs and cats in the Cửu Long (Mekong) Delta region, offering these services at no cost to pet owners. Now in its fourth year, the programme was launched on April 19 and is a collaborative effort by the local district administration, the German biopharmaceutical firm Boehringer Ingelheim, and Nông Lâm University in Ho Chi Minh City. This initiative aligns with the Vietnamese Government's ambitious target of achieving zero human deaths from rabies by 2030. This year, the focus is on community engagement, emphasizing vaccination's pivotal role and educational efforts in rabies prevention. The programme deploys company employees alongside 60 veterinary students and eight lecturers, who will be actively involved in both vaccinations and raising public awareness through accessible educational activities. Đinh Thị Phương Khanh, deputy director of the provincial Department of Agriculture and Environment, noted that over the years, the programme has enabled the delivery of 33,000 vaccine doses, significantly enhancing rabies control efforts within Đức Huệ District. “This programme has brought about meaningful changes in rabies control, helping to safeguard the health and lives of our people,” she stated. According to the World Health Organization, rabies claims around 59,000 lives globally each year. WHO advocates for at least a 70% vaccination rate among dogs and cats in high-risk zones to curb disease transmission to humans. Despite advancements in rabies control, Việt Nam still reports between 70 and 100 deaths annually due to the disease. In 2024, rabies claimed 80 lives, an increase from the previous year. Lê Quang Thông, head of the university's Faculty of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine, reiterated the importance of a systematic and coordinated approach, combining mass vaccination, community education, and pet monitoring for effective rabies management. He advocated for proactive veterinary support and timely vaccinations as the cornerstone for sustainable rabies prevention. Niklas Birkner, leading animal health efforts at Boehringer Ingelheim Vietnam, echoed the sentiment, stressing the importance of collective action and collaboration among local authorities, professional entities, and the broader community. “Every vaccination is not just about protecting pets – it is a crucial step in safeguarding public health and supporting Việt Nam’s goal of zero human deaths from rabies by 2030,” Birkner emphasized. This coordinated vaccination drive reflects a significant step towards a rabies-free future in the community, underscoring the critical role of partnership and shared responsibility in public health initiatives.
