He said his decision is aimed at restoring unity in the country. He apologised to 16 million people who voted for him in the April 12 election. A main reason of his decision is that the country is celebrating HM the King's 60th anniversary on the throne, Thaksin said. However he will remain in the position as caretaker prime minister until the Parliament select the new prime minister.
