Making the turn into the Laguna Resorts at the police station and bang ! Checkpoint.

BIB's "license and tax paper".

Two of them standing there as I pull my license, show, then lift the seat off my motorcycle where I keep my tax paper..............gone.

The two BIB's "you have to have tax paper, where tax paper?"

"Damn guys, I do have it, it's lost". I'm dressed nicely give them my card they are sort of looking at my bike, I've got my wallet out and they say "you have to pay fine!" As my wallet is already out I open it and show about 120thb.

"Guy's, I only have 120thb"

The BIB's look at each other and bust up laughing, "o.k., o.k., just get the paper" and they let me off the hook.

I was thinking he meant the third party insurance paper - apparently you are supposed to carry that (although I've never been asked for it).

I've never even considered carrying my insurance docs. I have a copy of the registration book in the car.

@GOM

What do mean by tax papers ? Do you mean registration papers ? I've never ever been asked for reg docs. Is this a new money making scheme ?

They always ask for the tax/rego paper in Pattaya. Although they often don't ask for more than one thing at a time. i.e They'll ask for the licence at one checkpoint, the tax papers at the next checkpoint, and then do you for no helmet at the next checkpoint, and then search for drugs at the next one.

Some people think it's because the BIB can't multi task - I see it as very clever multi level revenue gathering. coffee1.gif

Sounds like they felt sorry for you. I always carry at least 10k for these sort of potential problems

Does he mean the road tax disc?If so I thought that was supposed to be on display all the time

That's my thought as well. Surely you do not have to carry the documents, just the sticker.

Yes, sticker required. Even if the road tax has been paid you still need to display the sticker. I know this to my cost as I have been fined for not displaying the sticker even though I had the reg book which displayed tax had been paid (sticker had been lost by previous owner - I went to license office that day and got a replacement disc for a nominal fee ). I guess now that there is no insurance sticker then proof of insurance must be carried and a registration book or copy was always required.

Maybe the OP, GOM, can clarify what he means, or the BIB meant, by "tax paper." Unless another member can clarify it.

Just, exactly, what are we talking about when we say "tax paper?"

I carry a copy of the Green Book registration page and the receipt that comes in a little envelope for motorbikes when you pay for your yearly road tax and registration. It has your name, the license number of the vehicle, the amount paid and when it due again. I carry a copy of my Blue Book truck registration and A-1 Insurance envelope in the glove box along with the last renewal of the government tax and insurance receipt. The last time I was ever stopped at all was maybe 5 years ago. They still had the separate Registration (tax) sticker and a Government Insurance sticker on cars as well as motorbikes.

Thats what I said, about 5 years ago. But now there is a small receipt that has all your information on it. It comes in a very small blue envelope. I guess I can scan one mine if you don't know what I'm talking about.

I don't carry the book, but best I photocopy and laminate it and start carrying that as well.

Call me suspicious, but I wonder if Thai's were asked for "tax paper" as well?

Whilst the OP was let go, could this / will this become another "earner" for the BIB until the word gets around?

As I said , I think it's the little blue envelope that is a computer print out of your fees. I could be wrong, it wouldn't be the first time and certainly won't be the last.

Yopu get tax sticker, not insurance sticker. Used to be you received 2 stickers, now only 1.

You get a tax sticker which you have to put on your bike / car.

The tax sticker is only issued when you can show your insurance papers at the tax office.

Therefore no insurance means no tax sticker.

Only one sticker is now sufficient.

Yes, I always called it registration paper too, but when I went into the police station to get a doc to get it replaced they called it a “tax paper”. The colored one that has the year on it that you get when you pay the tax at the counter.

@IrishIvan

With 10K in your pocket all the time now I understand why you need to carry a hockey stick !

You carry 10k in case a copper asks to see your bike papers? The BIB round your way must love you! Every day must be 100 pipers day round your area.

Thanks for the clarification. The "tax paper" is what I call the "registration paper." I was thinking I may have been lacking some other document to be legal.

Not really - some insurance companies issue a sticker with details where to contact them. More for advertising. Not the same as the previous government insurance sticker.

Its around 350 dollars. That isnt much money. In a place like Thailand where money is worshipped I feel comfortable if I have an accident I can just throw money at the problem and drive off, no phone calls or fumbling around at an ATM. 120 baht or 4 bucks is not going to help you in any country.

OK, please make a photo of your sticker for the compulsory insurance and post it here.

Wow. I've had my motorbikes for 4 years and I thought I was doing everything by the book by getting the pink and blue sticker.

I've never heard about this insurance thingy for motorbikes. Where to get it and for how much? Is it really mandatory? What does it insure from?

For this year the tax sticker is blue. Since you have that it is 99.9% sure you also have the compulsory insurance.
