Exporting New Yacht from Thailand > Malaysia / Procedures?

Hi to all yachties & experts;

I have a yacht built in Thailand which I want to export out of Thailand to Malaysia. The yacht is newly built and in the process of being registered under Malaysian flag now.

Has anybody done this and could supply a checklist regarding procedures. Is there any taxes, duities, special paperwork I need to be aware of? Or would anybody know about a reliable agent who would do the entire paperwork for me?

One more question: How can a I possibly obtain a Thai non-commercial Captain's license.

Thank you kindly for any feedback. M.S.wai2.gif

As an agent, I would recommend a lady called Porntip of Porntip Logistics: http://phuketindex.com/porntiplogistics/index.htm. Her email/phone number is in that link. A Captain's license (it's actually called a Helmsman Certificate, valid for vessels up to 30 tons), is obtainable from the Marine 5 offices just inside the Port gates at Ao Makham. Again, Porntip will be able to advise you on this also.

For the Thai Helmsman's Certificate, when I got mine 4 years ago, the guy in the Marine 5 office asked my wife if I could drive a boat, and that was it!

If you plan on bringing the boat back to Thailand at any time in the future you would be better off registering it in Thailand. You can still keep it in Malaysia for as long as you want but if it is Malaysian registered you can only keep it in Thailand for a maximum of six months (or 1 year with a marina contract) before you have to take it out of the country. The rules are set to change when the Asean Economic Community starts at the end of 2015 but they are more restrictive now.

I'm surprised the builder doesn't know. Porntip will sort it for you - it's a nightmare. I have always found the officials in Malaysia far better to work with than the Thais.

Although the ability to fog a mirror is a requirement for a Thai captains license (needing to be documented by getting the same meaningless certificate you need for a car driving license), AFAIK you must also be a resident of Thailand and get a letter from immigration to that effect to include with your application. Along with 3 fotos of course!

Make sure you have a rough idea of the fees before you get to the office. Last time i was in there the Officer in charge told me i could save by paying him cash (under the table). After looking into it i realised he was asking for a lot more than the real price. Their really corrupt in there. Be careful to get reciepts.
