The Lone Ranger rides again !

Featured Replies

After reading for a week how terrible the movie "The Lone Ranger" is I decided to not go to see it. However, my Thai friend wanted to go see another movie at airport plaza (one I would not want to see) so we split up and I did step inside to see just what was so bad about the movie.

Without giving anything away here, I would like to say that the Lone Ranger of my early years was somewhat different in this movie.

My Lone Ranger of the 1950's on Tv, never, I repeat never, had stubble. And, I sorely missed the 'William Tell Overture' playing in the background. But lo and behold at about the 2 hour point into the movie it was time for 'that masked man' to give the bad guys hell.

In full dolby sound, the overture blared out in the theater and I traveled back in time to my childhood and our little black and white tv set, and enjoyed the action hero all over again. If you have any doubts about seeing this movie, do as I did, go anyway and be thrilled by a fiery horse with the speed of light, a cloud of dust and a hearty HI HO SILVER !

I thought Johnny Depp was an 'interesting' Tonto, sort of Pirate from the Caribbean turned Indian....kemo sabay.

Jay Silverheels, the actor who played Tonto on the old TV series, lived in Brooklyn, NY and had a big Indian face painted on the side of his garage. I used to pass by when visiting a old girlfriend. Return with us now to those days of yesteryear when the Lone Ranger rides again!

It's sad/difficult to realize that there is an entire new generation who don't associate the Wm Tell Overture with a hero.

I was constantly asking my wife when he was going to say 'Hi Ho Silver'. She kept telling me she had no ideas what I was talking about, to shut up and that she was only there to see Johnny Depp. He gets around to saying it though (you know when, OP).

Honestly .... although not really in the tone of the original tv series, I quite enjoyed the movie.

For all you Ranger fans, a bit of trivia. In the movie The Gladiator When Maximus talks to Lucious about his two horses on his armour, the names he gives them ( Argento and Scarto) can be translated as Silver and Trigger.

Not the Tonto of bygone days

Tonto.jpg

News Flash -- the Lone Ranger is showing with an English soundtrack at KSK. How rare these days for an English language movie to be shown at KSK. Sure, they still show Hollywood movies, but usually dubbed in Thai without English subtitles.

Just on general principle, wanting to show support for the showing of an English-language movie at KSK, we went to see The Lone Ranger.

Here's my review -- the opening scenes and that fantastic final 1/2 hr are great. All the stuff in between was boring and overblown. I was frustrated because there was obviously much money spent making this movie, yet some tighter editing and a good dialog writer could have really made it special.

But, I'm not complaining. The price was 110 baht, the aircon, sound system, seat comfort and picture quality were very good and, best of all, we could decide 15 minutes before curtain time we wanted to see a movie, stroll over to KSK and be enjoying an entertaining movie in a fraction of the time it would take to get to Promenada.

There are a lot of PC complaints because Johnny Depp is not a "real" Indian. How can anyone tell under all that makeup?

Is that bird on his head dead or alive? Wait...don't tell me...it'll ruin the movie.

Did you all catch what the ranger said to tonto at the end of the movie? He asked Tonto if he knew what Tonto meant in Spanish.

The answer is fool.

Well I was disappointed with it. If I hadn't been such a big fan of it when it was on TV I would have enjoyed it more. As it was all I can say is it was OK. He never even used a disguise once in the whole show.

I watched the movie 2 days ago and liked it. But then I live in Siem Reap where entertainment is thin on the ground.

An hero................. what like maybe Wm Tell?

Now we wait for Hopalong Cassidy, Roy Rogers and The Cisco Kid......oooh Cisco, oooh Pancho.

Today's action heroes could learn a thing or two from the Cisco Kid.... Do you realize in all the years that the series ran, Cisco NEVER killed anyone! He always either shoot the gun out of the bad guy's hands or shoot them in the leg. I have several episodes stored on a hard drive. Good clean fun!

That's done it. I'm not going now I know the ending. Just like The Titanic, the movie was ruined because everyone knew the ending.

Dirty Harry was more fun!

Well.... yeah. But a terrible role model for today's youth. Look what it did to us! ROTFL!

I thought he said "Hi yo silver". His horse must be getting pretty old by now.

His actual words were; "Hi-Yo, Silver! Away!"

Silver is not a real spirit horse either.

In the German dubbing of the old series, it's Hi Yo Silver, Fart! I think it loses something in the translation...

The original one is... Roy sent Trigger to the taxidermist. Clayton More should have done the same.

"More hay, Trigger? No thanks, Roy, I'm stuffed."

Tonto is more commonly used when you want to call somebody "stupid". Qui mo sabe on the othr hand means " he who knows". But in these PC days I am probably not allowed to say this, wouldn't want the film to be accused of racialist comments.

Would a real Indian want to play the part? How about a Bollywood version - that would be fun.

Being a Brit, I've never bothered to find out who played the original Tonto up to now (it's been a looong time)

Tonto was played by Jay Silverheels who was born Harold J. Smith on May 6th 1912 on the Six Nations of the Grand River First Nation, near Brantford, Ontario, Canada, son of a Canadian Mohawk tribal chief and military officer, Major George Smith (Wikepedia)

That video brings back TV memories for me. But 1949 ? I guess I must have been watching much much later re-runs.
