BANGKOK, July 16 – The Office of Ombudsman has officially sought a clarification from the National Police Bureau over an inappropriate act by its senior officer, Kamronwit Thoopkrachang, who met with ousted prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra in Hong Kong last year.

Ombudsman spokesman Raksakecha Chaechai said a letter was submitted to National Police chief Adul Saengsingkaew on July 2, asking him to investigate Pol Lt Gen Kamronwit’s ethics concerning his Hong Kong trip.

The Green Politics Group earlier lodged a complaint with the Ombudsman against Pol Lt Gen Kamronwit for visiting Mr Thaksin in Hong Kong after he was officially appointed metropolitan police commander.

Pol Lt Gen Kamronwit put a photo of him and Mr Thaksin in his office.

The Ombudsman's spokesman said a meeting between a high-ranking police officer and the fugitive ex-prime minister sentenced to imprisonment in absentia could tarnish the integrity of the national police force and lead to criticism of the justice system.

He said Gen Kamronwit is entitled to explain his actions to his superior, and the Office of Ombudsman has not pinpointed that the officer breached the law.

The national police chief has been given 30 days to explain, and the Ombudsman will consider if it would further submit the complaint to the prime minister if the National Police Bureau fails to take any action, he said.

He said the National Anti-Corruption Committee received a similar complaint and inquired of the Office of Ombudsman.

Meanwhile, Gen Kamronwit said he is ready to accept any consequences to be taken against him by the national police chief.

He said he was proud to have his royal insignia as metropolitan police commander attached on his shoulder by the former prime minister during their meeting in Hong Kong. (MCOT online news)

I wonder if he requested permission from the Hong Kong authorities to wear uniform in their jurisdiction since he wasn't there for an official purpose ? Of course not it was authorised by Mr. T.

A fag is also a piece of wood... What a strange story this is. I have no idea why this would come out, perhaps to discredit the policman. I personally liked the part about submitting the complaint to Thaksin sister .I am sure she get right on top of that. :-)

Because they don't see anything wrong in meeting the PM in HK and letting him pin on the insignia seeing as how he decided who was having the job anyway.

we wouldnt want that now would we... I don't think anything could tarnish the intergrity and public standing of the police force.... as low as you possibly can go to start with.

To answer why an explanation is needed I would simply state " because he is still the boss and beside state department issued him a new passport so go hunting for answers in the government backyard first"

Mind you I think these photo ops that Thaksin is grabbing are not helping his cause

If this request is handled as have earlier ombudsmen requests, it will be ignored, thus the time frame extended, and this sequence repeated. Not sure why or how this offical part of the system was created, but it seems to be unable to get any respect/response from this government.

Thai police chief orders probe of Bangkok's top cop

BANGKOK, July 16 - Thailand's national police chief has ordered an investigation into the meeting between the capital's Metropolitan Police Bureau chief Khamronwit Thoopkrachang and ousted prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra in Hong Kong last year.

Pol Gen Adul Saengsingkaew said he had received the Ombudsman's letter asking him to launch the probe. The police inspector-general has been assigned to investigate and determine whether or not Lt Gen Khamronwit's action was a breach of police ethics as alleged.

Gen Khamronwit would have to testify before the police inspector-general, the police chief said, assuring that justice will be served for all parties concerned.

However, he said, there would be no transfer of Gen Khamronwit pending the probe result.

Gen Khamronwit earlier said he was prepared to face the music but insisted that he did nothing wrong having former premier Thaksin decorated him with a police insignia after being promoted to city police chief.

Mr Thaksin fled the country in 2008 before being handed a two year prison sentence for violating Thailand's conflict of interest law. He has been living abroad in self-exile ever since. (MCOT online news)
