The unfortunate critter was crossing the road when it and FIL, on his trusty motorbike, arrived at the exact same place at the exact same moment.

Being a practical man where putting food on the table is concerned, and the dead mongoose appearing only minimally damaged................in the bag it goes.

Having just walked in the door after a five month sojourn in the jungles of New Jersey (different kind of jungles), I was greeted with a big FIL ly smile and a magnificent mongoose in full rigor mortise (which, I might add, emphasized it's amazing........hmmm......length.......hmmmm.......yes.......length). I new the critter wasn't in the house for show and tell, that it was going in the pot. Don't get me wrong, I'll try anything and like virtually all of it, but I recently ate grilled paddy rat and had to spit it out. Greasy, gammy, just plain awful. Mongoose being a rodent, I approached dinner with trepidation. The mongoose curry arrived and not wanting to seem ungracious I tried just one piece, lo and behold, it was wonderful. Slightly sweet and unlike any meat I've ever tasted, with a subtle undertone of something..........cobra maybe. That dish with a simple yam pla grapawng and rice made for a thoroughly enjoyable dinner.

Bon Apetite!

Just one problem with this story: there are no mongooses in Thailand. They're only found in Africa, south Asia and southern Europe.

So what was it really?

I have had civet, which is in the mongoose family, and I really liked it.

By the way a mongoose is not a rodent.

I wondered about that, I should have checked first.

Wow, that shook me up, fortunately wayned came to my rescue. I assumed it was a mongoose having seen cobra mongoose shows at the Marine Bar 25 years ago. They never let it go too far as the tip money would never cover the cost of a new cobra every night.

The plural of mongoose? Is it mongooses or mongeese? Never mind, mongooses is correct, spell check did not approve of mongeese.cheesy.gif
