Popular Post Thailand
Mc Donald's at Airport Plaza provide seating for clients outside the shop next to the window. Yesterday there was a local elderly Farang sitting in one of the chairs writing or playing with his phone. He had no drinks or food in front of him so obviously was not a customer, just using the facility provided for customers. ( I confirmed with the staff later) After a few minutes a group of Chinese stopped by the remaining empty chair with their luggage and a youngster, who,it turned out was not well, sat down. One of the group went in to McD's to get some drinks & food and returned to the youngster in the chair the other 3 went away leaving their luggage ( stopping off at AP seems to be the norm for returning Chinese) It was very amusing to watch the Farangs reaction to having "his" space invaded, apoplectic would best describe it. He then vacated the seat and went over to the fish tank where it looked like he was likely to explode. He was later joined by a lady and it was obvious from his wild gestures and grimaces he was describing the dreadful treatment he had been subjected to. Now I certainly would not occupy seating at an establishment whose facilities I was not using either here nor in other countries- would you? The object of this post, none really, just wish I had a video to record it and not just words! Whilst on the subject of occupying seating of a business that you have no intention of using. Just opposite McD's around the same time Mitsubishi were promoting various vehicles and had provided chairs and tables with literature on them for potential customers. Two Farang placed their luggage next to the table, dumped the literature on the floor and proceeded to play cards! Just one of those days.
Popular Post theblether
Good on the Chinese family, guys like him stick in the mind of the Thais and give us all a bad name. I remember an older member saying he remembers a time when farangs were respected / given respect here, and he lamented that time has long gone, death of 100 million cuts. My most memorable low level example of farang stupidity this month was watching two muppets trying to drive through Jacks Van bar when it was packed out, Jackie stepped over and tried to shoo them back, not content they put on a stupid grin each and went faster. No hesitation Jackie knocked them off their bike and took the key out of it. Muppets response? " Hey man what did you do that for? " Maybe we should open a thread for daily stupid farang in Chiang Mai reports.
terminatorchiangmai
A lot of people that live in the land of smiles are losing their manners. Some think that if they live here long enough they can get away with anything but get annoyed when they are seeing other persons doing exactly the same things. jackr
Yes, unfortunately CM is blighted by this 'entitled, face like a smacked ass' type nowadays. They should be tagged & bagged.

kurnell
I don't know why McDonald's doesn't employ the same policy as Starbucks where you have a limited time to sit in their establishment based on monetary expenditure. Then when a non-customer tries to use restaurant facilities without buying anything, the gutless Thai staff can ignore them much the same as they do in Starbucks. CobraSnakeNecktie
Practicing racism against ones own race? That's rich sign of impending mental breakdown. Anyone remember when comedian Dave Chappelle played "Clayton Bigsby" ? He was the Black KKK member. He was supposed to be blind BTW. Popular Post FolkGuitar
We are 'known' to the Thais... I walked out of a guest house the other night, just as a tuk-tuk pulled up. I was just about to tell him my destination when HE asked 'you go home?' I said, yes, and started to say the name of my condominium when HE said the name, then added 'I know, I know... and you lived in XYZ condo before, right?' I'm usually good with faces but I'd swear that he never drove for me before... We are 'known' to the Thais... So behave.

Japanese generally do not tip and thus are not expected to. As we all know big tipping by certain elements of the Farang crew have created an expectation where any white face who does not can be considered a cheap charlie or worse, a "bad farang". uptheos
"Now I certainly would not occupy seating at an establishment whose facilities I was not using either here nor in other countries- would you?" I wouldn't but there are many people of all races that would. I suspect it's easier to notice the farang who is acting the idiot, because he is like us (in appearance). But taking the McDonald's post purely as an example, I doubt very much if the seating outside was occupied by a group of Thai's without food or drink and playing with their phones, that they would even have been noticed by a farang. I have sat in a crowded food court on a table with two or three Thai's and they don't like it. Likewise I have sat at a table occupied by farang's and they too didn't seem very pleased. I have had experiences where the opposite happened and they were welcoming.

" Maybe we should open a thread for daily stupid farang in Chiang Mai reports. That's not my experience. The level of respect a farang receives depends on whether they understand a few basics about Thai society. On the most basic level Thais respect people who dress and behave conservatively. Behave means not being aggressive with words or actions, speaking gently, respecting krieng jai (empathy with other's feelings and respecting hierarchy) and not displaying emotion. I observe many older and quite aggressive Western men with 'poorly educated' Thai wives who have little respect for the hierarchical structure of society here. When it's mentioned they often grunt "that's crap". They can't speak Thai, only socialize with other foreigners socially similar to themselves and often bleat on about how Thais don't respect them. When foreign men marry 'poorly educated' women or sex workers, the wife doesn't rise to the level of the foreigner but the foreigner drops in prestige to the level of his wife. This is then reflected in the level of respect Thais show him. It's a hierarchical society - nobody is equal and everyone has their place within the hierarchy.
