The toothless grin had me worried, even more so the fish swimming in an inch of water outside his shop? I didnt ask why it was there almost suffocating in the air as he threw water over his plants with a bowl

Shop? a loose term for sure, the toothless grin and thick rimmed glasses lured me in.............

Some extraordinary loud Thai music blared out, I was the only one in the place, the walls and floors looked like they had been there forever.

He started off with those shaver things removing vast swathes of my hair I expected to be "Leonardo" pretty soon, next the scissors, felt a bit rusty but cut ok, adjusting his glasses and slipping the chair into "business class recline mode" he then produced a cut throat razor!!!!...........I lay still awaiting the blood to come spurting out.

15 minutes after going in I was a new man, 80 baht lighter but bugger me I dont know how the toothless grinner did it but he had given me the best haircut and shave ever.

I normally dont praise Thailand much ( if at all, for good reason) but this ole fella did a cracking job.

A 40 baht tip had the lovely grin out for all to see, we both came away very happy.

What I don't understand is how a good shave like that lasts so much longer than my usual slash and burn with the Bic.

When I get a great shave like that, I want to run up to the first woman I meet and press her palm to my cheek

"Is that not as smooth as a baby's bum"

"Give over, ye great fat lummox"

"Sorry, Thora"

"But it was smooth... Vera, 'ave you felt Cowboy's cheek?..."

My barber is a lady who barbers in between working on her fruit trees. She makes conversation like any good barber. The autistic son was a bit of a spin out first time but I do look forward to the shave and the cold towel after. Magic, 40 baht. There's something about a barbers chair gets my shoulders loose or something, makes me really relax, even though the leather is shiny and cracked and it feels like its going to break, the upper market hairdressers sometimes don't have chairs like that.

I never had a great haircut until I came here. Go figure.

My girlfriend's an exceptional barber, and self-taught at that. She asked if she could open a salon in the States. I said, sure. Just have to go to a full year of full-time school (even learning cranial nerves) pass an exam, get a health check-up, get a license, find a place zoned for ......

One day after a haircut the barber asked if I would like a shave, what the heck why not. He produced a cheap looking razor with a plastic handle and proceeded to butcher my face. Three razors later he had finished, leaving me looking like I had fought three rounds with Freddy Kruger.

The poor young man was incredibly apologetic and gave me the shave gratis, little did I know I was his first farang victim. I still use him for my haircuts but shave before I visit, lesson learnt for both of us.

And thus is the explanation how some people contract hepatitis.

The virus can survive at room temperature anywhere from 16 hours to 4 days.

Anything that comes in contact with blood or human fluids must be sterilized.
