Do you remember when you had Your First Car. The reasons you gave to borrow a few $ of Granny. If it had an extra 20Bhp it would be safer to overtake, big wheels and suspension Mods are essential for Safety, all that bullshit, when you just wanted to blow yer Mates Away, and impress the Girls. Now our Kids try it on,as if they just invented the "Safety Con".What were Your Try Ons...........................biggrin.png

Never asked for any money for mods! Paid for them myself. Actually thinking with I didn't buy many actual mods for cars except once a Reece camshaft from Leonard Reece for my Cooper S. Oh and some struts for an Escort.

My early cars were 2-stroke and later on I bought cars with mods already done.

Scooters was different I used to belong to "pipe of the month" club.laugh.png

My first venture into tuneing was to remove the hubcaps of my 105E Anglia, fit a Wood Rim steering wheel, remove the Aircleaner and replace it with an old sock so it roared, then about 5of us all cut white circles from fablon and stuck circles on our doors. No Question about it we all got a power increased at least 10BHP.biggrin.png

cheesy.gif You don't come from Essex by any chance?

My first tuning mod was a screw driver through the silencer/mufflerw00t.gif

Sadly I'm with transam:sad.png

Oh and

and impress the Girls.

FYI Girls are usually not impressed by anything other than cleanliness, the colour and the driver's ability to spend money on them. Of course one doesn't realize this until it is too late. laugh.png

Spent 2500 dollars (own money) on building a mini leyland with a moke engine - bored to 1310 cc, race cam, headers, short skirt high rpm pistons, extremely loud 2" exhaust, 100mph top speed 2 inches from the ground....those were the days when testosterone ruled over commonsense......sold the rust bucket for 400 dollars before I came to LoS :)

Funny you should mention Granny. Although my father had given me a '59 Prefect van (with the bakers doors), I wanted something a bit more dashing so I conned my grandmother into loaning me $700 to buy a '66 Ford Falcon Coupe (the one with the 'huge' 170ci motor). That car was like a tank. A loud exhaust and a couple of stickers were its only mods though.

Travelling on a country road through western Victoria on my way to the drag racing in Melbourne one weekend, I was blinded by the sun, missed a bend and went straight across it putting the car on its side in a ditch. Flagged down a farmer on a tractor who hooked up a chain and pulled it out, and then I watched in horror as it rolled across the road and landed on its other side in the opposite ditch. Thanked the farmer, got back in it and drove on to Melbourne. You can't buy one of those in good nick for less than $20,000 now.

And the Prefect ... I was able to lift the motor out of it on my own by throwing a rope over a rafter in the garage and lowering it onto a tyre. It met its end, however, when I drove it a little more spiritedly than it was intended to be and it threw a piston through the side of the block. I stuck it in the front yard and sold it for $100.

(I also bought my first motorbike in 1975 - a 1957 Cossack (Ural?) 350cc single - stubborn old thing it was)

When I went through my phase of modding cars, no way I was able to ask Granny or anyone else for some money to help! Everything had to be kept secret...

I even told my father my first car was a Skyline GTS Type-X 2.0L version (155HP, not even sold in TH LOL) dressed up to look like the GT-R (over 500HP after mods) :P

You have to be kidding! My family was as tough as old boot leather and the first time I found out about love was when I looked it up in the dictionary.

Come on? My 1293 would do almost 120! Maybe you geared for something else?

Agree about the testosterone ruling over common sense. But then as a gender we are ruled by it, one way or another.

As I recall, Mini 850, 970,997, 998, 1071 had 3.75 final drive, 1275 had 3.4. smile.png

From a early age always mad about cars, little changed all these years later........ Drove cars, trucks and tractors from aged 7..

1st car sure Sunbeam Rapier bought it at 15 for 30 GBP, [My money saved up by my 2 Paper rounds per day] by the time I could drive on the roads was fully repaired and in top condition, all done myself.. not a lot to do so bought another car to do up Armstrong 346 for 12 GBP, sold that a year later for 300 GBP and for 50 GBP bought a newer model a 1960 Star. took 5 gallons of oil to drive it the 40 miles home, stripping the engine found a big hole in a piston...have owned 4 Armstrong's......... then went on to Mk 2 Jags........

Sunbeam Rapier I kept as every day transport for 4 years, The Armstrong Siddeley Star I kept for 12 years and made a large amount of money when I sold it.... got fed up with Jags stripping and repairing had about 8, moved on to something more difficult....... Big Citroen's mostly DS models

Never been into things like a Mini, but then I simply have never been of the size to fit into one.

From a stand still the 970 or 1071 was a fun ride, gearing. thumbsup.gif
