Fire cracker ban tightened in Yala after siblings seriously hurt

YALA, 31 July 2013 (NNT) – As Eid al-Fitr celebrations draw near, Yala officials are tightening control over the sales of firecrackers, after a pair of siblings were seriously injured by firecracker explosion.

Yala Governor Detrat Simsiri on Tuesday visited the 4-year-old girl and 11-year-old boy at Yala Central Hospital's intensive care unit. The siblings suffered burns on the face, arms and body, and still have pieces of firecracker lodged in their bodies.

According to Mr. Detrat, provincial authorities earlier banned firecrackers during the breaking of the fast celebration, known locally as Hari Raya. District permanent secretaries have been told to visit stores and inform them of the ban, and provincial Islamic committees have been asked to make announcements at mosques about the ban. The governor said the siblings had bought firecrackers at flea markets, which was difficult to control. Authorities have now increased stringency over the sale ban at such markets.

Governor Detrat said he was requesting parents' collaboration in cautioning their children against the firecrackers.

New storm brews on the political horizon

BANGKOK: -- One wrong move by the government and it all can go to hell. That's the summary we can deduce from political analysis in a Thai-language newspaper. The good news is the analysis is in a column known for its sensational lines. The bad news is, it's a newspaper sympathetic to the Yingluck administration.

Flood situation in Tak stable
By Digital Media

1375242616914-640x390x2.jpg

TAK, July 31 -- The flood situation in Thailand's northern border province of Tak is stable as the Moei River surged to flood areas in both Mae Sot in Thailand and Myawaddy in neighbouring Myanmar.

Looking from the Thai Myanmar Friendship Bridge in Mae Sot's Tha Sai Luat subdistrict, the high level waters of Moei River could be seen reaching into both countries.

Homes, commercial buildings and shops were damaged by the deluge.

Talad Rim Moei market was under water, stablised with no sign of easing.

Many residents and shop owners gathered on the bridge to see their homes and shops but they could not enter their properties as the flood water was still high. (MCOT online news)
