Interpol issues global security alert over al-Qaeda plot, prison breakouts

LYON, FRANCE (BNO NEWS) -- The international police agency Interpol issued a global security alert on Saturday, urging increased vigilance in the wake of several prison breakouts and intelligence reports that al-Qaeda may be plotting to carry out a terrorist attack in the coming weeks.

The French-based police agency issued the global security alert to its 190 member states on Saturday. It said its 24-hour Command and Coordination Center and other specialized units are prioritizing all information and intelligence in relation to a reported al-Qaeda terror plot and recent prison breakouts in nine countries.

"INTERPOL is asking its member countries to closely follow and swiftly process any information linked to these events and the escaped prisoners," Interpol said in a statement. "They are also requested to alert the relevant member country and INTERPOL General Secretariat headquarters if any escaped terrorist is located or intelligence developed which could help prevent another terrorist attack."

The global security alert comes just a day after the U.S. government said al-Qaeda and affiliated organizations are believed to be plotting to carry out terrorist attacks in the coming weeks, particularly in the Middle East and North Africa. The U.S. State Department issued a worldwide travel alert for U.S. citizens abroad and instructed embassies around the world to close on Sunday as a precaution.

It's beginning to look like those who doubt the authenticity of the US's announcement and decision to close certain embassies and offices will have to doubt Interpol too.

See Eye Ey?

any actionable intelligence?

if not, ... why?

Remember threats can be diffused with locals only who know their territory, strangers etc ...

Otherwise it's an overall 24/7 common threat.

Regards

I see

Ask yourself hard questions? Who supports AlQaeda with weapons and training in Lybia, Syria, Afghanistan, Iraq etc ... ? This practice dates back as early as the time of the Templar's ...

it's all on record!

Oh, the NSA allegedly intercepted phone calls from AlQaeda and learned about planned terrorist attacks ... so sweet ...

... but they didn't hear about the freeing of prisoners in advance though. - hahaha ... It's fear mongering ...

... let's pray not to meet a false flag attack again ...

and now they are mixing up former Qaddafi supporters and others with Qaeda? Come on ...

The bizarre thing is why Bama chose to go so public. A former special forces guy formerly assigned to protect embassies was interviewed this morning. He said proper mo would have been to stay of public media and just do what needed to be done without the media shit storm. That does make it appear as if Bama, Kerry et al are just grand standing a bit due to Benghazi and to foster public support for NSA stuff.

What a joke. Actually, shows weakness more than strength when you really think about it. I am embarrassed for them.

Surgically implanted bombs that are undetectable appear to be the new technique terrorists have developed and are expected to use before too long - probably very soon.

Recent Prison Breaks Are Fueling Al Qaeda's Global Comeback

A fighter from Islamist Syrian rebel group Jabhat al-Nusra runs with his weapon as their base is shelled in Raqqa province, eastern Syria, March 14, 2013.

The recent series of prison breaks is no coincidence.

In less than a week 500 senior Al Qaeda leaders escaped during two assaults on prisons in Iraq, more than 1,000 in a prison assault in Libya, and another 250 in a particularly nasty Taliban assault on a Pakistani prison.

Former intelligence analyst Joshua Foust argues that these prison assaults are concerted, often well-coordinated, efforts on behalf of militant groups to capitalize on destabilized regions:

Al Qaeda warned us this would happen. Last summer the leader of al Qaeda in Iraq, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi ... [posted online] ... "I bring you good news. We are starting a new phase in our struggle with a plan we named `Breaking the walls,' and we remind you of your priority to free the Muslim prisoners."

Syria's civil war is due to get much hotter now, and Iraqi civil war could be around the corner. The international police organization Interpol is freaking out. The U.S. has reportedly sent special operators to Baghdad, military advisers to Jordan, and Marines to Italy for potential action in Egypt.

President Barack Obama argued that Al Qaeda had been decimated, but with the rise of these prison breaks, we're now seeing headlines like "Al Qaeda Is Back."

US Official: Al-Qaeda Messages Indicate Planned Attack 'Big'

http://news.yahoo.com/us-official-al-qaeda-messages-indicate-planned-attack-131208969--abc-news-politics.html

On the day that almost two dozen U.S. embassies and consulates across North Africa and the Middle East are closed following the identification of a significant threat from an al-Qaeda affiliate, a senior U.S. official is providing new details about the communications intercepted from the terrorists, telling ABC News that al-Qaeda operatives could be heard talking about an upcoming attack.

The official described the terrorists as saying the planned attack is "going to be big" and "strategically significant."

"The part that is alarming is the confidence they showed while communicating and the air of certainty," the official said, adding that the group - Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula - appeared to have a media plan for after the attack.

Authorities do not know the exact target of the planned attack, according to the official.

"We do not know whether they mean an embassy, an airbase, an aircraft, trains," the official said

.

The official said there is concern about devices that could be implanted inside the body of a terrorist.

"We are concerned about surgically implanted devices," said. "These are guys who have developed the techniques to defeat our detection methods."

During an interview for "This Week," Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Gen. Martin Dempsey told Martha Raddatz that there is "a significant threat stream and we're reacting to it."

And had the authorities remained silent, and something occurred, you would be the first offering up an accusation of incompetence, malfeasance and all manner of ridicule.

No pleasing you is there?

I fail to see how this would tie in to the NSA anyway. The intelligence to confirm the threat would have been obtained on the ground in the implicated region and would have come from multiple sources, including co-ordination with local intelligence assets in the region.

Not about pleasing me. I think that this person that used to be in charge of security at embassies perhaps knows protocol and he made sense about going public having some ulterior purpose and contrary to expected protocol.

From what do you base your statement about source of the threat?

Sen. Saxby Chambliss of Georgia said Sunday "the chatter" intercepted by U.S. intelligence agencies led the Obama administration to order the weekend closure of 21 diplomatic facilities and to issue a global travel warning to Americans. He told NBC's "Meet the Press" that the intelligence was "very reminiscent of what we saw pre-9/11."

Interpol says the jail breaks freeing al Qaeda leaders "constitute a major threat to global security." Many of the leaders had been sentenced to death.

Sounds serious enuff to me. In fact, it sounds like these guys are being put to work without delay or time to catch their breath.

Interpol issues global alert following Al Qaeda prison breaks in Iraq

http://www.globalpost.com/dispatch/news/regions/middle-east/iraq/130724/interpol-issues-global-alert-following-al-qaeda-prison

Interpol issued a security alert Wednesday after dangerous prisoners, many of them reportedly members of Al Qaeda, escaped two Iraqi prisons earlier this week.

The alert came at the request of officials in Iraq after gunmen attacked the Taji and Abu Ghraib prisons simultaneously near Baghdad on July 21.

Using mortars to gain access and free the prisoners, militants killed at least 20 members of the Iraqi security forces in the process.

The jailbreaks constitute a “major threat to global security,” Interpol said Wednesday.

Many of the escaped prisoners were senior-level Al Qaeda members, some of whom had been sentenced to death.

Al Qaeda in Iraq made it clear in 2012 that the “breaking the walls” campaign to free its members in jails was a top priority for the organization.

Perhaps every one should pull out and send them a bunch of arms and let them have it there way and just blow each other up. Shouldn't take long for Darwinism to run its course given the right weapons.

Another latecomer.

The Muslim workweek is from Sundays through Thursdays.

So yes, Western embassies are open on Sundays throughout the Muslim world.

Except this Sunday. And possibly for another day or two, perhaps more.

It's a little hard to close an embassy and not say anything. People tend to notice. People tend to get upset when they go to the Embassy and it's not open and there is no notice. It's a lot harder to close 22 Embassies and not have the press make something about it. It's even harder when the UK, France and other countries are also closing some Embassies.

Exactly. Only the accusations would be more along the lines of US govt guilty of culpable homicide.

Once the US has knowledge of risk they are duty bound to warn citizens. How else, other than public broadcasts, can they do this.

I can see both sides. I am just not articulating well what I heard this morning and too tired to look it up to get finer details. What this Navy SEAL guy said made good sense.

This is not what the SEAL said, but this does present a different perspective.

Graham was also quick to credit the administration's knowledge of the attack to the National Security Agency's spying practices. "The NSA program is proving its worth yet again," he said. I thought al Qaeda had been decimated and were on the run thanks to the killing of bin Laden? I guess that was more campaign rhetoric, just like the recovering economy. Still, these prison breaks prove that it is too dangerous not to just kill these terrorists when they are caught in the first place. Time to throw PC-ism out the window and kill them all and let Allah sort them out.

"The NSA program is proving its worth yet again"? So these al Qaeda communication intercepts came from within the USA and from between US citizens? Now that is very troubling.

Most of NSA's work is global intercepts. Always has been. Something like 80% of foreign electronic intercepts are made by NSA.

I haven't seen the word "conspiracy" yet but I'm sure now it's coming soon to this thread. If not the word itself, then the implication.

The post above is just confused garble about NSA's actual work. Somebody's limited knowledge of NSA is based on reading only TVF posts and thread topics, which is what's really troubling.

Al Qaeda plan to 'change face of history' led to U.S. scare: Yemen

http://news.yahoo.com/al-qaeda-plan-change-face-history-led-u-142608407.html

A vow made in a phone call by the leader of al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) to carry out an attack that would "change the face of history" lay behind this month's closures of many Western embassies, Yemen's president said.

"When I was in Washington, the Americans told us that they had intercepted a call between Ayman al-Zawahri and Wuhayshi, in which Wuhayshi told Zawahri that they would carry out an attack that would change the face of history," the president told police cadets in remarks which state television aired on Friday.

"This made them (the Americans) scared and they closed their embassies in the whole region, because they heard Wuhayshi say he would carry out an attack that would change the course of history," Hadi said.
