BANGKOK: -- Five members of the Lisu tribe were arrested yesterday along with a 22-year-old Nepalese man for trying to smuggle 34 kilograms of heroin into Malaysia, Office of the Narcotics Control Board (ONCB) secretary-general Pongsapat Pongcharoen said yesterday.

The drugs were allegedly destined for sale in Taiwan, Australia and Europe.

Police arrested the Nepalese man last Thursday and seized drugs in his possession at Chiang Mai airport. Later, police extended the hunt and arrested the Lisu tribe members at a hotel in Chiang Mai's Muang district. They also raided a house in the Mae Taeng district where they found another 28kg of heroin, he said.

Separately, the mekong River naval patrol unit nabbed a 39-year-old Laotian woman along with 18,000 yaba tablets at the Ban Na Waeng Pier in Ubon Ratchathani's Khemmarat district yesterday. She was reportedly on her way to deliver the drugs to customers in the Central region.

That's a mighty big catch. The Thai police should offer life rather than death for identifying the next higher up Thai Mr. Bigs.

They're so lucky they got caught on the Thai side otherwise it would've been certain death!!! How they can even think of going through Malaysia is beyond me, especially with that amount!!!

YO........Thats Sixty Two Kilos of Smack..........t.hats enough to get the entire country high...............you don't really think they know who Mr Big is do you??? The Malays have a good way of disposing of rodents, squeeze them for all the information they can get, then publically put them t death - Like Thailand used to before all the tree huggers and "Oh We Love al, of You" crowd came here in the 90's - we need Thaksin's iron fist back........."kill them all and let a higher power sort it out"............. just because there was no evidence they were traffickers, doesan't mean they weren't guilty.

Always good to see due process and the rule of law given their proper respect in this forum.

I've seen a lot more families destroyed by alcohol abuse then by heroin. Most junkies when they get high just tend to nod out and not bother anyone, but there is nothing uglier than a drunk with a bad temper. Unfortunately these guys will probably get the death penalty while "Mr. Big"

goes free.

Every time there's a drug bust someone brings alcohol into it.

Alcohol is legal. Being drunk and disorderly is an offence in most countries, as is driving under its influence. Most countries also place age restrictions on its purchase and consumption. However it is legal and therefore widely available and more readily open to abuse. Heroin is illegal in most countries for a good reason. The supply chain creates violence as well as profits and those addicted resort to crime to fund their illegal habit, whilst it destroys their lives

Tobacco still probably kills more people than alcohol or heroin, but no one bothers to mention that. Tobacco is also legal.

Get real - the laws are the laws. Stop trying to dilute the effects of illegal drugs by slagging off alcohol. There are vastly more responsible users of alcohol than aggressive drunks or alcoholics. Anyone supplying or using heroin is breaking the law and therefore a criminal.

Bravo, I have seen first hand the destruction that heroin brings to individuals and their families.....hang em and hang em all high

Personally, I think we should just legalize it. They did it in Paraguay and they have done great. They will save billions in revenue fighting a war that can not be won and put that money somewhere that really might help people.

Sorry, but I can't stand any government interference with anything that affects personal freedom. Even if it is bad for me, it should be my choice.

That´s not 18000 yaba pills and not 34 kg or 34+28 kg heroin in the picture. It looks like 1-2 million pills.

What pills?

"Separately, the mekong River naval patrol unit nabbed a 39-year-old Laotian woman along with 18,000 yaba tablets......"

OP is written a bit confusingly I think. I would assume that the 28 kilos of H found at the house was part of the 34 kilos reported.

Otherwise the headline would read they were caught with 62 kilos.............

May be wrong............

The operative word being 'should'. They won't.
