I see lots of, Nai Harn is best, Chalong is best, Layan is Best, Patong is worst.

Ok so what makes a good beach?

For me,

not to wide

shelter from the sun without renting a beach chair

food availabe without a long walk or crossing a street

If food available, not to expensive

not to many sun chairs for rent ( ie i hate 2-3 chairs deep) example Surin

Space availabe for laying out ur chair without being hassled

area set aside for swiming vs jet skies

swimable most of the year

parking for cars and motorcycles

Other........

So lets hear which is the best. I withhold my opinion for the time being.

in a way, but just curious about what others look for in a beach. If u have other things i would be interested in hearing them?

What beaches full fill the above criteria?

Layan is great Beach but nowhere to live affordable nearby

as far as surf an clear water. the two cant go together here :-)

on shore breeze brings the surf but muddies up the water

Safe swimming and not having to worry about having to jump in and risk my own life while on holiday like down at Kata beach 18 months back...there and Karon are bloody death traps and claimed many lives over the years..two weeks back four in a week!

One important element in Thailand, is finding a beach without sandfleas. My last visit to Koh Samet, I got eaten alive. I thought it was mosquitoes; but no - it's almost invisible

sand fleas. I personally do like Cha-Am beach, I'll use that in future.

In Phuket, any location where the fecal coliform count is less than 100 per 100ml as that is the international standard for water contact recreation.

Oh...and if you hadn't already guessed, not a single one of the beaches on the west coast of the Island meets this standard. Not even in low season.

Clean beach and water, no jet skis, banana towing or parsailing operations.

I don't mind the chair rentals as long as they don't insist they own the beach.

I like to bring my own beverages and fruit snacks.

That pic looks great, I do like Kata Noi when I am on Phuket.
