BANGKOK: -- University students from various institutes plan to join the campaign to topple the regime of Thaksin Shinawatra, Thaikorn Polsuwan, a leader of the People's Army said on Wednesday.

The students, from Ramkhamhaeng, Kasetsart, Rangsit, Thammasat and Chulalongkorn universities, were planning anti-government activities with the People's Army, Thaikorn said.

He added that vocational students also wanted to join the rally but their schools had stopped them, fearing the Education Ministry would take them to task.

"I believe the schools can't stop students who want to join our rally," he said.

The anti-government rally at Lumpini Park has continued in a lacklustre atmosphere with little recent activity on the rally stage.

Thaikorn said his group agreed in principle with the government's reconciliation plan but believed such a plan could not be achieved as long as the Thaksin regime exists.

He warned members of the People's Army to follow its live announcements and not material posted on its website which had been hacked.

Thaikorn said the online struggle between supporters and opponents of the government had intensified with government supporters posting messages to mislead People's Army members and attack the group.

This reads to me as somewhat staged, and the universities look to be the elite universities of the Kingdom. I am all for corrupt and oppressive governments being overthrown, but just what attracts so much opprobrium to the Red Shirt government? Thailand is not collapsing, the economy is doing ok, there is no more corruption or oppression than with previous governments, and the red shirts (by what ever name they currently enjoy), have the overwhelming electoral mandate. My advice to the yellows, take a break, devise electoral policies that will allow you to win a democratic election, and stop causing unnecessary disruption and ill will in your country.

As the yellows and all their variations, much like the UDD, and their red stormtroopers, are at their core anti democratic fascists, violence, intimidation and direct action through street thuggery are all they understand and their preferred method for getting their way. They have no interest in democracy, opposing views and any truth but their own.

They rose up against a military junta in 1973, not an elected government.

The Thammasat massacre happened later in 1976 in protest at the hanging of workers in Nakhon Pahnom and was committed by right-wing pro-Royal vigilantes.

The Bangkok Post doctored photos of the students uprising at Thammasat in 1976, to show them committing Lese Majeste, which was the trigger for the massacre.

It would be a tragic irony if students side with these vigilantes. Shows how history can be so quickly forgotten and weak minded people so easily manipulated.

For those who came in late , shades of the student uprising of 92 ,that saw the toppling of the junta , abet, the trade off was, generals still headed departments, this still exists today and is a contributing factor in the unstable type of government Thailand has today, perhaps if this group can get their act together (Doubtful) they should also consider throwing out the generals too, Democracy lead countries don't have generals in corridors of power, except in military positions.

Er, with one slight caveat.In 1973 the students were on the side of the Thai people not the fascists.The so called Peoples Army is the direct fascist descendant of the elite financed and supported villaged scouts and red gaurs

I doubt they are that motivated. Also, unless the govt. is really really dumb, in light of the high exposure social media brings, that they would massacre a bunch of students is quite unlikely. Then again, knowing the Thakanista, anything is possible!
