PHUKET: -- A 30-year-old American was last night (August 14) recovering in hospital after a bizarre incident in Chalong Police Station.

Police, who withheld the American’s name, said the man walked in at about 8pm claiming that someone was following him. They asked for his passport and discovered that he had overstayed his permit to stay by a year.

They put him in the police station cells to await transfer to Immigration for processing.

While they were not looking, however, the American stabbed himself three times in the throat with something short but sharp. Bleeding heavily, he was taken for treatment to Vachira Phuket Hopsital, where he remains under police guard.

Police have been unable to find the weapon the American used to stick himself with, but believe it may have been a sliver of porcelain from the sink or toilet in the cell.

Sounds like a drug induced psychosis.

Strange to have porcelain in the gaol cells.

So soiling your trousers doesn't get you stamped "crazy" anymore? I had better stop.

Yeah, 3 hots and a cot are hard to earn these days I guess....better chance if you are working in Phuket with a permit valid in Bangkok!(remember?)

Most places con college can be had for threatening to jump off a bridge....

Starts out like a joke! Was expecting a punchline.

Maybe I am wrong, but:

the man walked in at about 8pm claiming that someone was following him

While they were not looking, however, the American stabbed himself three times in the throat with something short but sharp.

- isn't it possible that the person who was following him stabbed him (while the police weren't looking) ????

Possile, it is haunted. The one following him is not human, eiiiiiiii call the monk......

Maybe there was a faulty balcony in the cell.

It sounds like the police are concocting bizarre tales to cover up for the persistent problem of Phuket's teenage tourist-stabbing motorcycle gangs.

You watch too many movies. Obviously the guy has a screw loose

He might need protection from others that would do more than stab him with a short object. In this way can get 24 hour police attention. Just a thought.

It may just be crappy reporting, but I find it astounding that a guy can stab himself in a cell with a sharp instrument and the police are unable to find the instrument. It can hardly be a fully furnished 3 bedroom residence can it?

They suspect that it may be a 'slither of porcelain' from the sink or toilet' - for a start that is one posh cell if it has a sink and toilet and second, erm.... guys, is the sink or toilet broken - that would be a major clue wouldn't it?

Wow, this guy gives a whole new meaning to the concept of overstay. He's definitely been here way too long. They should waive the fine and let him leave ASAP.

An interesting part in the article is that police was not watching.

That's very strange, because police never watch cells, so why bring up something that does not exist?

perhaps he could just go home ?

He was obviously not serched properly.

They can't admit to placing him in the cell with a weapon, so, it had to be the porcelain whilst they were not looking.

Very dubious account from the Chalong police. I have experience with them and have never received anything resembling what is called Justice in any situation. While police do not watch the cells closely, they are close by. There is a body check performed on prisoners before they are put into a cell, so whoever stabbed this man was either allowed into the cell with a weapon or it outright is a case of violence against an unarmed citizen. Of course it's possible the American did stab himself, but since there was no interview of him, only the police account has been published. I have never experienced one single honest response from the Chalong police, in addition to never receiving any justice in every case I have brought to them, not just regarding other Thai people ripping me off, but in every way, they won't even give correct information to basic questions. Then they smirk and laugh like monkeys afterwards, it's like watching evil performing various forms of violence wearing uniforms. This post will probably either be deleted or pushed out of the forum, but I just can't don't believe this story of a man stabbing himself in the throat for having an expired visa.

Compassion from posters seems to be lacking for this unfortunate souls situation. I won't speculate on the why and what, but I hope he is repatriated to his home country to take of care of whatever delivered him to this unfortunate condition.

For having an expired visa, he is required by law to go home to America. He has to go through Immigration in Phuket Town, where they will incarcerate him until he has someone provide a ticket back to the US, or they put him in a crowded cell with a lot of Burmese immigrants until they send him off to Bangkok to await deportation. In the interim, he might once again "stab himself" using contraband whatever...provided by whoever allows such things to go into prison cells. My experience is that if violence or injustice is committed against an incarcerated civilian, it is allowed to be committed by authorities and it's done without any pretense at justice. I also experienced the US officials working for Immigration at the Phuket Town office, and also for the US Consulate in Bangkok, who are supposed to help US citizens, but instead of providing help and justice, they help attack a prisoner if they are a "persona non grata", which is possible for this American man. If that is true, he will receive no justice and anything can happen to him and not a single official will intervene in the violence committed against him or provide any legal protection or justice at all. Since this has happened to me, and there is no legal recourse for this type of violence, all I can do is write about it on this forum, but I think it will be deleted. If Thai Visa publishes this, I will admire them for allowing a less than politically (silent) correct type of post.

Well they could not just admit that they forgot to take his knife away before putting him in the cell.

Do you know of something that is not strange, TIT coffee1.gif

.....I swear....I have to ask.....was anyone else in the cell with him.........

.......'suicide attempt in a jail cell' according to the other Thai criminals with him at the time....????....could it be...???

...luckily there were no balconies in the near vicinity...

Sounds like a drug induced psychosis.

I have to ask about your knowledge that they do not use porcelain in jail cells. How would you know this? Personal experience? lol

Well i blame the toilet !

Wonder what he said before???

"There, that will teach you."

Lots of conspiracy theories here but the likely story is that this man is mentally ill and paranoid and walks into the police station for help. They put him in a cell without searching him first and he tries to take his own life. I hope he has loved ones that can get him the help that he needs if my scenario is true.
