Lite Beer Posted August 17, 2013 Share Posted August 17, 2013 NIGERIAReleased workers vow to stay in NigeriaThe Sunday Nation NIGERIA: -- Four Thai workers from Udon Thani who were kidnapped in Nigeria, have been released unharmed and are insisting they will continue to work there, Foreign Minister Surapong Towichukchaikul said yesterday.Surapong said he spoke on the phone to one of the four workers. He said the men, abducted last week while travelling to work at a fish farm on the Niger River, were taken and used as a bargaining chip by a group seeking claims to the local fish farming business.Surapong said he was told they were well cared for while held captive and released after the "bargaining" was completed. He dismissed rumours that a Bt10-million ransom was paid for the workers' release. One would have to wonder if they see a money maker here by repeating the process again. A Company I worked for, employed 2,500 Thai workers in Libya. Overseas Thai workers pay a lot of money to job brokers to obtain these jobs. The money is often borrowed from loan sharks so they cannot afford to return to Thailand, as they cannot pay them back on local Thai salary. I don't see them as money makers deliberately getting kidnapped. It is no joke, a friend of mine, Ken Bigley from Bangkok was kidnapped and beheaded in Mosul Iraq in 2004. Another friend from the UK was held captive for a long time but eventually was released. A Korean friend was kidnapped by Algerian Al-Qaeda from my Project in the Sahara and left tied up in the Sahara 5kms from the nearest haul road and 250kms from the nearest town. That should help get Thai Air out of the red. Or do they all get free travel? Seriously, is this saying that Nigeria is better than Thailand?
