PATTAYA: -- On Sunday afternoon a full-scale marine emergency occurred after the Captain of a ferry reported an engine fire.

The ferry “Pasan 3”, captained by Khun Wirort aged 45, was on its way to Larn Island off the coast of Pattaya, to pick-up passengers who wished to return to the mainland.

During the journey to the Island, the Captain lost power and saw smoke coming from the engine compartment which soon escalated to a serious fire which engulfed part of the passenger seating area.

The Captain and 5 deckhands evacuated the vessel and were transferred to speedboats which were quickly on-scene. Everyone was accounted for and no injuries were reported.

Afternoon it would be empty. Most normal people would go in the morning, spend all day on the beach, and return before sundown. Unless you think they would go over for half an hour. The same ferries return empty in the morning.

This could have been a major disaster had the fire broke out on the ferries return trip, saving grace would be that it is low season.

I really enjoy people watching at the Bali Hai pier. During the tourist season, the boats go out and come back full of passengers, all day long. Many people just want to see the island, and then come back rather quickly. It is sad right now though to see how empty that pier is, and the boats. People watching is out. You can't even watch them load the supply boats there anymore. They have moved to a dock by the new marina.
