Army Chief: Satisfaction is prerequisite for reconciliation

BANGKOK, 4 September 2013 (NNT) – Army Chief Prayuth Chan-ocha says only when all parties find a common point of satisfaction will reconciliation and peace to the ongoing political conflict arise.

In a press interview, Army Chief General Prayuth pointed out that in order to reach the ultimate solution to the current conflict, satisfaction has to be reached among all parties, adding that all sides must have sincerity to find the solution. If the conflict does not end soon, General Prayuth said it will be a downhill from here as the country will lose a lot of opportunities.

The army chief also defended former British Prime Minister Tony Blair on his 5 possible solutions to Thai political deadlock. He said Mr. Blair did not try to intervene in the situation, but instead, he was just giving opinion and sharing his experiences he had acquired over the years, adding that Mr. Blair’s proposals were just options Thailand could select from.

However, General Prayuth said it is impossible for all sides to be 100 percent satisfied and to get what they want, but everyone has to take a step back and compromise until a mutual satisfaction can be reached.

Did he really give 5 possible solutions?

That's not the way I read it, it looked more like he was saying there are things that should be done in order that a compromise could be reached.

However, General Prayuth said it is impossible for all sides to be 100 percent satisfied and to get what they want, but everyone has to take a step back and compromise until a mutual satisfaction can be reached.

That of course includes PT compromising by withdrawing the amnesty bill and the constitution changes which are the only things preventing opposition parties from taking part in the forum.

I see that everything is being concentrated on Tonys speech and those of the other overseas guests who were less than complimentary to PT's way of going about things are being ignored.

It would probably not be unreasonable to say that those 'others' have far better credentials, both individually and collectively to be giving advice on this subject than Tony.

The PTP translation would be " just agree with everything we say or suggest, we will be satisfied and that's all that counts ".

Another person who hasn't a clue of what's going on...........one of more than a thousand Generals....a joke!

The US Army had 312 generals around June 2011......and they reckon it's too many.!!

Personally, I'm good with everything if Thaksin's crimes aren't white washed. Either he stays away forever or if he comes back, he serves time. No amnesty for him.

Why on earth do you care if he gets amnesty or not? Has he personally harmed you in any way?

I can't fathom why people here are so concerned one way or another with a matter that is nothing to do with us and over which we have zero influence.

You have zero influence on what I post and yet you're concerned enough to post and reply. I can't fathom why you're so concerned with what I post!

It was a genuine question. Why do you care?

I've little times for most Thai politicians. I doubt if many would be missed.

The reason people are concerned is the effect his return might have on Thailand as a nation. A violent coup or maybe even a civil war could follow and nobody in their right mind wants that.

From my personal perception I think the military should stay out of political comentary. Outside of communist countries or dictatorships there is not one country in the world that has prospered from having its military envolving themselves in either commerce or politics.

Something to do that when he was PM he disempowered every institution created by the 1997 Constitution as a check on the government and destroyed every NGO that disagreed with him. He used his office to double his wealth. He sued any reporter brave enough to report the truth if it put him in a bad light. His party(ies) were caught repeatedly cheating and were subsequently disbanded. He strived to become a democrat dictator the same as his friend Hun Sen and his role model A. Hitler. He is a very personable man though and I really like him socially. He's just a disaster for Thailand and is responsible for 80% plus of the trouble and strife in this country since he was deposed.

Come on,who cares if he comes back or not it makes not one iota of difference to us.

Life for farangs will not change. The last coup made no difference to us so why should another. It is just a part of living here. Coups happen, govs come and go but life goes on and we are still welcome.

This is purely a Thai poiltical issue and any of us who think it concerns us is deluded. We are insignificant.

That's why I asked why does anyone care?

So I am not going to let my judgement be clouded by 10 years ago things that I did not like happening. I am more concerned with Thailand today and if the Devil incarnate could help I would welcome it.

You would possibly prefer a Hamburger and Pizza thread. What I can't understand is posters on Thai Visa where we share opinions being upset by it. We all know we are helpless to do any thing about it. But some of us really care about Thailand and it rubs us the wrong way to see it going down hill.

I really wish this d**k wasn't asked and if he was he said "comment".

As for what he said, indeed, a five year old could conceptualise this.

It will only get sorted if both parties are happy. Stunning intellect.

Did any one tell them how to sort it out?

You are forgetting he was not speaking to Thai Visa he was speaking to Thai politicians to them it could well be a Stunning intellect.

Well reciprocity in negotiation doesn't hold up in a pee and Nong society.

I was thinking more interesting out look on the Thai culture. If you are going to compare it to a western culture. I was referring more to an educational level. As far as my out look on the Thai culture it is just different not better not worse just different.

I met a couple who were teaching school here in Bangkok They really loved Thailand. After a year and a half they were leaving.I asked them why and they said they were starting to get like so many of the foreigners a jaded attitude towards Thailand. So they were leaving before they got that bad.

I repeat he was speaking to Thai politicians not Thai Visa.

If you have ever done any significant business in Thailand, the ability to get terms on any deal to be mutually acceptable to both parties is an extremely long process, and very very difficult to achieve. I managed to save a Thai company months on their terms just by sitting down with the buyers and giving them various discounts for paying earlier. Their standard terms were 90 days and it was crippling the supplier.

It was amazing to see that on their buyers side no one had ever tried this approach with them. It isn't unique to Thailand but the concept of pee and nong definitely comes into all negotiations in Thailand. In my experience Pee says what he wants, and Nong says, "ok". Problem is in this negotiation, they all believe they are the superior Pee.

We do have some influence. Same as the media has influence. I bet you that if The Bangkok post and The Nation would have been pro-Thaksin, he would have been back already. One of the main reasons PT lost the BKK Governor elections is because the media said that Jutuporn would became Pongsapat's deputy. PT never killed that story. That made many people cast their vote, it helped Sukhumband a lot because Jatuporn is not liked by many Bangkokians. .

I am concerned about many things even if the issue doesn't affect my life. If we don't discuss it on social media (for example) the issue might be forgotten.

You'll be surprised how much influence the media and we the public have over situations.

I assume Hellodolly that when you write 'he' you mean Tony Blair.

I never said anywhere that I disagreed with what he said, in fact I think it was quite reasonable.

However I do question the general who twisted the suggestions made into '5 possible solutions' for by my reading of the transcript of the speech what he said were only pointers to a possible solution and not solutions in themselves.

I personally have nothing against Blair for I am not a phom and was not affected by anything he did or did not do and have never posted anything against him.

I stand by my comments on the other overseas speakers at the forum.

Brilliant interview. Now can someone please figure out exactly what reconciliation means? How on earth can an undefined, non-specific goal possibly be achieved?

You are not listening to General Prayuth or the 'beat of the Drums'. The form resolution of the Thaksin issue is not germane to the quest for harmony in Thailand, simply a small part of the greater whole.
