New to Chiang Mai? Beware of this scammer who says he needs bus fare to get home.

Featured Replies

Isn't wrong to declare someone a criminal and then post their picture all over the internet? This OP has also placed this person's picture on Reddit. Perhaps posted on other places online? But only one side of the story --- hers. Is the OP the judge and jury? In Thailand, she could easily have committed liable by posting this and defaming this person's character. This person that she claims is a scammer would win a big award in civil court.

There is nothing wrong legally with the picture and post. If there was the Mods would have pulled it.

Now morally I think that is a different story.

Mind you there are times I would like to set myself up as the Judge Jury and executioner. But I never manage to execute.

He is scamming nobody. You see beggars all over Thailand, all over the world. They all have a story, change for a cup of tea please, lend me 20p for the taxi please, blimey if the OP is so outraged by this then I suggest they don't leave the relative safety of their living room. Quite frankly it saddens me that somebody should come from a relatively wealthy country with all the comforts afforded to them and persecutes a street beggar on the internet. Despicable.

He's been around for many years. Used to be in Tapae gate area, but haven't seen him in a while.

Yess.. years and years and years.

Not very smart. But apparently it works for him.

i gave this christain lady who stopped me in nimman 100bht,and she got quite annoyed and insisted i gave her another 100bht,got to laugh at there cheek.

Yes, and that's exactly why this guy is a scammer too.

He asks for a bus ticket to some place not too far away (like Doi Tao). That costs like 40 baht or so and I was actually inclined to give it to him (this is years ago, it may be 60 or whatever now), but then he claimed it cost 200 baht.. That's a scam.

Simply begging for whatever a person wants to give is fine.

But once you start lying then that makes it rather obvious what you are.

Not a big deal and he's fairly harmless as far as scams go. But still a scammer; there just isn't another word for it.

I knew a guy who had been pastoring a church near a busy highway in the US (Interstate 80, in Iowa). He regularly got stories of "my car just broke down, and if you could give/loan me $300 I can make it home to Colorado" or wherever. After a while he hit upon a strategy. He would tell them, "sure, I'll do that. But I have a hedge in back that needs to be trimmed. Will take you about an hour. You trim the hedge, I'll give you the money." He said in 10 years of using that line, the hedge never did get trimmed.

$300 to trim a hedge that takes an hour. I would do that .

if you have a bike take him to the bus station and say I helped as far as I can.go beg in the bus station

they is the taxi scam in swampy as we all know.one year I saw him after it made the papers,he was still doing it no change.i said you are the one who was banned or did the taxi scam,he left me alone quickly

I 1st met that guy 9 years ago and I gave him 100baht, I met him many times since and he never recognises me and spins me the same old yarn, he speaks english very well. As far as I know he comes to and from Sanpatong everyday, I've seen him cycling out that road many times.

As for the monk beggar dude, he's a Chinese monk (sorta) that's been collecting donations to build a temple for the last ten years :D

Man..doesn't time fly, eh?

He used to bother the businesspeople on my street a few years ago. If you did not give him money, he would do a little ceremony out front afterwards. I always got the feeling that he was casting some sort of a curse.

People like this are completely harmless. Really don't see the need to post their picture.

Everyday people cough up increased taxes and utility bills without giving their "consent" . Far bigger scams going on there.

Its the institutionalised scamming you want to watch , not some guy asking for 100 Bt for a bus fare.

If you don't think institutionalised scamming takes place, take a look at the BBC at the moment.

I certainly prefer this guy to the "scammers" in London last year. Came out of the station with some friends, some "Romanian (?)" lady asked us to give to some charity (ie sell us some sort of charity keyring). When we declined, she shouted that we would all burn in hell. I may of told her to piss off home whistling.gif

IF someone posted my photo with the words:

"New to Chiang Mai? Beware of this scammer who says he needs bus fare to get home...."

And then posted:

"Tell him you know he's a scammer because his photo is on the internet."

I'd be filing suit. And I would win.

Also, "...you know he's a scammer because his photo is on the internet"? Really? Is the all it takes to "prove" something these days? Jesus!

By the way, "scamming" and "panhandling" are two very different things. If you can't tell the difference then you need a little more life experience.

dont no were your living mate but doi tao,is 120kilometeres away think its 300 bht plus???? on the bus.

Ah.............the milk of human kindness of Thai Visa.

Personally i would like to post a picture of the OP naming him ( or her or it ) as a scaremongering fool.

What a great idea!

In another thread, you defamed the Sukantha Buffet by saying it is: "it's crap, literal and metaphorical."

I didn't notice 'crap' in any of the terrines myself, but if you did, then you probably won't mind

posting YOUR picture in the buffet thread so the Sukantha folks can take what legal action against defamation they think is proper.

As long as you can prove there was 'crap' literally as you say, you shouldn't have any reason not to post your photo, right?

He isn't a scammer, he is a beggar. He'll always want more. If he was a scammer he'd be offering you a gold necklace made of cheap metal, that is a scammer. I think because the OP got duped they labelled him a scammer. Two bits of advice to the OP, if you weren't so naive you wouldn't have been duped so stay at home. Secondly, put down to experience the fact you got annoyed because a street beggar took you for a few quid.

Happy to oblige.

An old but still accurate photo.

How cute. Why am I not surprised?

Say, do you have any objections to me using Photoshop to add about 30 years onto the photo and re-posting it?

Not those blue ordinary mid sized buses aren't. I think they're 70 baht these days. Much less then. (40-50 maybe)

Either way the point is that his claim of what a bus ticket costs is untrue.

He's approaching foreigners because he thinks they're too stupid to know the actual price. If that's not a scam then I don't know what is; it's no different from a girl with a sick buffalo story, asking for an inflated amount to pray on the goodness of others.

A scammer is someone who tries to trick you out of at least a couple of thousand pounds. Someone trying it on for anything less than a few hundred baht is a mere chancer and as such is someone to be either ignored or humoured. Either ignore him or give him 50 baht for his troubles, that's what I'd do.

I know this guy.

He lives in Soi 3 off the Tapae Road just passed the Tapae Place hotel where the road bends around to the right.

He speaks quite good English and has been at this game for many years. The man has in the past approached me with a cheery Hello, where you come from? Can you give me 20 baht? I always pretend I believe his story and give him some money.

Just a harmless old guy, and I doubt that the FBI, Mossad or MI5 would be interested in the exploits of this master international criminal.

You joined the forum just to warn your fellow expats about this dangerous criminal??whistling.gif

The poster didn't say anything about this guy being a "dangerous criminal." He just said this guy was hitting people up for money using a fictitious story. It's good he posted his photo. I ran into this guy a couple of years ago, and found him both irritating and aggressive.

I have known of this man for over 25 years, he is quite a character in the town, and have never heard of or had any experiences of him acting aggressively.

Perhaps you just found him irritating, lost your temper and provoked the man? Which is more likely the case.

I didn't loose my temper, although I did suggest he get a job. Perhaps the thought of working provoked him.

I always tell him that it would be easy to get a job, because he speaks English so well. He usually loses interest in me after that. tongue.png
