central audio hi-fi shop

Hi

Can someone recommend a shop where i could browse and maybe get advice on top quality headphones & amplifiers - for home-listening (to classical music)? I want to look at some Beyerdynamic headphones, make an informed choice, get prices and then think it over and/or refer to online reviews before returning to buy. I don't live in Bangkok - will b visiting for a few days - hence my preference for a centrally-located, easily-found shop.

Thanks

Siam Paragon have at least one dedicated Hi Fi shop not sure what brands they stock, if you don't know the centre its at Siam BTS, ask at information.

Ive walked past many times and it looks like upper end stuff to me.

There's a good shop in the Exchange Tower, on the same floor as the BTS Asoke elevated access walkway. One staff member in particular, a girl in her early twenties, speaks very good English and seemed to be quite knowledgeable.

They stock the usual high quality brands such as Sennheiser, Shure, AKG etc but also the more obscure and exotic offerings such as multi-driver in-ear phones from Unique Melody. Many if not all are available to try, including Beyerdynamic DT770 (I have a pair of these and I love them).

Proplugin at Fortune Town, Ratchadaphisek is not bad either.

I'm pretty sure they stock Beyer & Sennheiser.

Might I caution against the following:

Refrain from getting any 32 Ohm versions of the DT series.

Stick with the 250 or 600 Ohm versions, and get a headphone DAC/amplifier, to pair up with the headphones.

I have seen in esplanade very nice Denon earphones especial for classic music. Have heard it. Nice, much more cheaper than in Europe. Nearly 3000 THB only.

I presume that european brands, e.g. Beyerdynamic, will not be cheaper than in Europe. But I need to check if there is a substantial difference, and if there is I may be tempted to buy it when I am in London over the new year. But I'll certainly be browsing - if not also buying - this month at the places mentioned above.

I would head straight to piyanas. they have a bunch of showrooms, I'll put up the link. i hate shopping in thailand, absolutely loathe it, yet, buying my hi-fi stuff at piyanas was a pure pleasure, affordable and all the stuff has been top notch. you should get a member's card, and you will get a decent discount after that. i did - didn't ask for it, and it didn't cost any extra.

I went to amarin, but I didn't like those specific brands. probably is due to my ignorance. anyway, that is my input :)

Spent a good half-hour at this shop getting lots of advice, opinions, preferences etc from the manager - spoke ok english - and I'm going to mull all of that over. (one opinion he held quite strongly was that the Sennheiser hd 800 was superior to anything by Beyerdynamic).

I have a pair of Sennheiser headphones but while the sound is OK the fabric and wiring has most all come away after 18 months use. Could not recommend the make.

I have a lot of headphones with the same problem but not quite as soon as 18 months. Problem is by time the headphone deteriorate they are classified as old models and the manufacturer does not carry stock/spare parts unless it is imported and then it is cheaper, almost ,to buy a new pair again.

He struck me as a rather opinionated sort of chap too (I observed him talking to someone else as I was browsing), which is probably why I instinctively avoided him and spoke to the young lass instead.
