Hello

Does anyone have a fixed IP address for thier home network ?

I have a premier account with 3BB for the past 4-5 years 1166 BHT/month which has been ok, I want a fixed address to install some equipment and 3BB said there would be a charge of 3-4K BHT and monthly internet would rise to over 3K BHT/month. This seems a bit excessive, wondering if anyone else has any experience with fixed IP and cost.

Cheers

Dynamic DNS services such as http://www.noip.com/ or dyndns or many others should provide all you need. They offer a domain name that will link to your changing IP address by automatically updating the Internet DNS servers when ever your IP address changes. Some are free some not.

If your router supports a particular service that is ideal, because all you have to do is create a domain name, make the small configuration changes in your smile.png router then forget about it. Linksys routers I think support DynDNS which is a paid (but inexpensive) service other routers such as TP-link and many others support the free No-ip.com settings. If your router does not support a dynamic DNS configuration then you can run the required program on your PC, but this means that if you are trying to access web cam or similar and your IP address changes you will be out of luck.

If you haven't already guessed I use the free No-IP.com service and am very happy with it. For my router, I use DD-WRT firmware on Linksys hardware

You can buy a lot of routers for 3,000 Baht a month

Thanks for the recommendations on why I do not need a fixed IP but would like some feedback on anyone that does have a static IP. There are reasons why I want the static address that i would rather not go into. Cheers

I use some fixed IP's but for work not home.

The reason it costs so much is likely that they are only available on the higher business grade packages.

Maybe the same speed (or less) but with lower contention ratios (sharing) and generally better performance, especially international.

Personally I wouldn't upgrade because of the fixed IP, though an IP may help choose which package if upgrading for better internet.

Yes, IP addresses here are way out of whack when it comes to charging. I know that getting more than one they would charge much more here, since there are less available in this region.... but your first static IP address should not cost that much since you pretty well are using one address 24/7 anyways - just gets cycled.

The price my DSL provider back in Canada charged was:

1 IP Address $4.00 / month /30 2 IP Addresses $5.00 / month /29 6 IP Addresses $10.00 / month /28 14 IP Addresses $20.00 / month

I had 6 in total (I think that allowed for up to 4 computers inside to have public numbers - including router assigned numbers).

They should start charging (world-wide) a "tax" on all IPv4 IP numbers to ISPs (which would go into a pool of funds to help ween everyone off of IPv4 and move to IPv6) so that we aren't in this problem of almost no assignable numbers left.

Hi there

I have Static IP/Fixed at 3BB and its 3.103 b per month incl vat. It works great, Its not the quickest but very stabile, in 6 month I Have maybe 1 or 2 times no internet and lasted like maximum 5 minutes so for me this is great. When I had normal internet I had much more problems so worth every penny.

3K BHT/month is exactly what 3BB quoted me. I need stability / low latency and not so much bandwidth for my needs. Appreciate the feedback.

If you need stablity/low latency then you need fiber.

Nope, a fiber line generally might only improve latency to servers in Thailand however, for servers outside Thailand its the same or few ms difference only.

As you haven't said why you need a static IP address I'm not sure if this is of any help but you can rent space on a European / US server (as in seed box slots) for around ฿300 a month and use openVPN, which would effectively give you a static IP address as far as the outside world is concerned. I'm sure it must be possible to do something similar in Thailand too.

Re. muratremix's comment: I wouldn't trust any company that promised me unlimited bandwidth on a server because they will undoubtedly not be able to deliver at the quoted speeds.

For 3kbaht you can get a dedicated server with 100mbit unlimited bandwith for f. Sake.

in Thailand?!...

Nope, in United States of course.

Bandwidth is very cheap nowadays so getting real dedicated 100Mbit ports for under $100 usd is easy.

But I also remember servers were not so expensive in Thailand, but of course international bandwidth is limited or shared for this kind of pricing. But hey, it still should be better than adsl's 1Mbit upload speed right?

I would never understand paying 3K baht for getting static ip. Thats ripoff by any means. There are better ways to get static ip for security or some other reasons.
