train dogs ....they're great sniffers for special applications

Featured Replies

We know there are millions of dogs in Thailand. Yet, are there any training facilities for dogs - to detect specific things? What initially comes to mind, are dogs trained to detect drugs. Yet there are a host of other possible applications, listed below.

>>> guns, ammo, explosives

>>> cancer and other diseases

>>> pesticides

>>> insect infestation in buildings

Just one of many reasons why trained dogs would be useful: Instead of the completely worthless, insanely expensive 'bomb detector' empty plastic boxes bought from Englishucksters - Thai officialdom could have employed dogs.

would be english

you want to see ours at work anything within a 100yds he picks up the scent.

The police and military are using, and have been using dogs for decades. Unfortunately it is very specialized training and the dog nearly always works with the one handler and the work undertaken as a game to the canine.

It is not a simple case of putting an object under a soi dog's nose and tell them to seek/fetch..............wink.png

Some time ago..2-3 years ? I used to visit a Welsh Guy with extensive training facilities, I think mainly for guard/attack dogs.

He once owned a bar in what was the area BIg C, S.Pattaya now occupies, he like many others was simply ejected with no compensation he said.

He drives/drove a pick up emblazoned with Union Jacks.

He transferred part of the bar to his new location, for his personal use. Full of interesting stories,

Can't rememember where it was except maybe 20 km SE of Jomtien. Anyone know what happened/where he is now please.

Any 3rd grader knows dogs have excellent sniffers. The trick is to train and use the dog for specific jobs.

It doesn't have to be dogs, for that matter. It could be pigs. But again, the animal needs to trained well and, as alluded to above, usually it works best if the same handler stays with the animal throughout.

Perhaps one or more farang specialists could train Thais to be trainers/handlers. Doubtless there is an economic dimension to it as well. If Thai officialdom is willing to pay a half million baht for an electronic device which doesn't work (to detect bombs) ....how much would they pay for a well-trained dog - which is effective and useful?

first they would have to teach thais how to put a collar on, and then show them how to use a leed,and how intelligent they are

I concur somewhat. The average Thai doesn't stop her dog from barking because she

figures - pick one of more of the following....

>>> 'it's a dog's nature to bark, so why should I meddle?'

>>> 'I don't hear it. If you hear something annoying, and it comes from my yard, then that's your problem for hearing it. Why are you listening to things from my yard?'

>>> 'I try to hush the dog by saying 'oy oy''. It doesn't work, but that's all I can do.

I know that's off topic to pick on Thais for allowing their dogs to bother others (without a care from the dog's owner), but it's indicative of the big picture: most Thais don't seem to be able to discipline animals.

Then there are mahouts, who discipline elephants. So perhaps there is hope that there are types of Thai folks who could train a dog to detect specific things that would be useful to know about (drugs, cancer, toxins on food, weapons, etc.) Of course, it must originate with the idea of doing so - and that's part of what this thread is about.

last night went to bed early so to get up and watch the footi,the dog came to,1am which was a bit toooo early the dog work us up he wanted a pee.i took him out [garden] normally he would have a look up the road then do what he wants,as soon as he got on the grass he bolted around the back of the house[its all walled mind] and shot straight up into the summer house then started to bark,as he only barks when danger is near the wf.heard him and came down to see what was up,its a good job she did cause he's too much for me to handle,what the hell a cat up in the roof no it was a bloody big snake.it must have come in through the gate or over the wall [6ft] this morning he's still running about chaseing the scent just hope its gone.what i saw of it not poisoness copper racer,but they can still bite although he keeps his distance.
