Hi, just in the process of purchasing a new Toyota fortuna, and have been asked by the dealer, to choose either silver or black window tint and either 40% 60% or 80% can have 40 for front side windows and screen and a deeper shade for rear, or any combination i like.

Any views on what would be best.

Thank you for your help.

There are millions of opinions on this. The best compromise depends on how good your eyes are and how much you drive at night.

If you are an old codger with reading glasses in the glove box and you drive at night, 60% on the front side windows will noticeably reduce vision for intersections and mirrors, especially if those tinted side wind deflector things are added.

Alternatively, if you are not at the reading glasses stage of life and / or drive mostly in the daylight, 60% on the sides is fine.

Be careful which brand they are offering you...

i.e. while one brand means that 40% blocks 40% of the light another on another brand 40% means that it lets 40% of the light through - Thus choosing from the numbers alone could be problematic unless you are sure of exactly what they mean by 60% or 30% etc...

For example: I nearly made the mistake of choosing a 30% film which blocked nearly 70% of the light !!...

Various brands differ in quality throughout their range, some letting through more UV than others.

Thai law allows for a maximum of 30% Visible light filtering (i.e. a minimum of 70% light to pass through) - This law is rarely if ever checked upon or followed. That said, I have 30% on both Wife's and my cars, I wouldn't want less for night driving.

Best option: Find out what brand they are offering (i.e. V-Kool, 3M etc)... then sit in a couple of cars with film already installed and base your decision from that.

You may also be able to defer your choice. Usually a sales rep and visit the car showroom (or leave a booklet of films) for you to look through and make your choice.

You can also checkout the 3M and V-Kool websites to get a rough idea...

Thank you for the replies so far, just checked with the dealer and the brand they use is 3M

Just my three pence worth lot's of peep's wont like this but NEVER put tint on front window screen as TA said a little from the top is ok and only light tint on front side window's otherwise you could be in trouble at night and I'm not old or have bad vision, just remember that lot's of Thai's don't have light's on their M/C or car's come to that. You'll be left with opening the front window's to see what's happening in traffic as your wing mirrors will be pretty dam useless. I did it on my one and had to pay to have reflective tint's put on.
