THAI RAK THAI NEW PARTY LIBRARY OPENED

Nearly 3,000 books, not a word of criticism

BANGKOK: -- The Thai Rak Thai party's new 30 million baht public library has almost every book about the legal process and politics _ except those critical of the Thaksin regime.

''This library will serve the public well as a place of recreation and a sanctuary for study. This is indeed another step towards Thai Rak Thai becoming a political institute,'' party secretary-general Suriya Jungrungreangkit said at the opening ceremony yesterday.

Located on the ground floor of the party's 14-storey headquarters, this 400 square metre library, according to librarian Pongnarin Leelaumpaikul, was endorsed by the Election Commission's party budget, a yearly fund given to every political party, and has around 3,000 books.

''Divided in to nine categories, this is a specialised library dedicated to politics, law, biographies of famous politicians and a special section with books recommended by party leader Thaksin Shinawatra himself,'' said Mr Pongnarin.

It is also the only place with a complete collection of Thai Rak Thai campaign brochures, papers and promotional material, all in digital format for safe keeping.

But among the more than 2,000 Thai language books and 800 foreign language copies, there is hardly any material on the shelves critical of Mr Thaksin or his policies.

''It is not that our library discriminates against certain kinds of books. If you search hard enough I am sure you will find such hits as Roo Thun Thaksin and books written by Thirayuth Boonmi from Thammasat University, it's just that we prefer books that are accepted by all parts of society," the librarian said.

Bangkok MP-elect Sansanee Nakpong, was more blunt. ''Books of inferior quality are not accepted into this library.''

Party executive Sirikorn Maneerin, who is in charge of the whole project, admitted that best-sellers such as Royal Power, written by former TRT party list MP Pramual Rujanaseri, was not among the selections.

However, more than 100 books specially chosen by Mr Thaksin himself including economic, social and even hard-to-find spiritual paperbacks were all present.

Apart from lacking variety, the library also has no newspapers. Mr Thaksin throughout his time in office has seen the print media as being too harsh on his administration, focusing more on negatives rather than positives.

''The newspaper stands will come soon. We are having difficulties negotiating with the suppliers,'' said Mr Pongnarin.

The more I hear about TRT, the more I think of Wat Thammakhai?, the temple in Pratumthani which seems to be a cult. It also reminds me of North Korean and its great leader or god?

Is TRT a cult?

If you visit the library add a few books with alternative opinions to the shelves.

Hi,

Now, English language Thai journalism is known for it's laughable abilities in reading and writing. Now, they are expecting us to believe that they have read 3,000 books, 800 in English, and understand what they said. Even the OP misquotes the article which reads "there is hardly any material critical of Thaksin" as "not a word of criticism". While English is not the mother tongue of the OP, it does point out the absurdity of reading Thai journalism and taking it seriously.

How many English books about Thaksin are there?

Remember, it was 2006.

It was easy to check if Baker's book made it into the library, and several Thai books critical of his regime as well.

The Wat is between Phahonoyothin Road and the motorway, past Rangsit-Nakhon Nayok, in Ampoe Klong Luang.

On Google Earth it's 14.05.04 N and 100.38.50 E.

One of the central tenets of Thai Rak Thai was complete control of information and the creation of "history". Very Rovian and Cheneyesque and when in power extremely effective. Why expect them to change?

Thaksin and the Thammakai cult were very close in many ways and share common styles and themes. Iirc Thai media did a lot of stuff on this and Thaksin used their facilities for his address to up country local admin dept people and a few others. Thammakai has been described as a facist Buddhist organization. They also did a famous thing about the virtues of being incredibly wealthy

Yet another example of how PAD/Dems have followed in Thaksin's footsteps and raped in kind instead of any real change since usurping power.

I am sure Sondhi's Manager newspaper will not be welcomed.

More propaganda :o

Worse.

Propaganda about propaganda.

You mean like the same you're doing with PAD?

I don't propagandize for PAD.

I have never met or spoken with anyone in PAD.

My comment above is about the obvious hagiographic nature of this library exercise.

I may have some opinions that may be in parallel with one or two from PAD,

and also from other parties and philosophical outlets.

I may also have some dislikes that are also in parallel with some of PAD's.

But my reasons are my own and NEVER have been PAD's.

Nothing makes it automatic that I am a member so your attack is meaningless.

Nor am I in league with ANY of them. You are making assumptions.

The enemy of my friend is not always my enemy.

Some times a friend's enemy is actually not your enemy at all.

But people feel a need of group defense of ALL their policies of life,

and so lash out even as they ignore the AGREEABLE positions of others.

That is the problem with middle positions, drawing from both sides,

both extremes think you are in the opposing camp.
