PHUKET: Phuket's new Provincial Police Commander, Maj Genl Ong-art Phiewruangnont, has arrived in Phuket.

On arriving here yesterday evening, in a convoy of nine police vehicles, Maj Gen Ong-art first visited Baan Muang Mai stone and then the Heroines Monument, to pay his respects to Phuket's illustrious history and cultural heritage.

Speaking to the Phuket Gazette before his arrival, Maj Gen Ong-art emphasized his transparent approach to the top job.

“Anyone who has a problem that the police might be able to solve is welcome to come and talk to me. I will help you all, to the very best of my abilities,” he said.

Before accepting this position, Maj Gen Ong-art was the commander of the Nakhon Ratchasima Provincial Police in Northeastern Thailand.

Lets hope he will be more successful with all the scams in Phuket. good luck ...

Sure, he will do his media spree with all blablabla then, when he will be about to announce an imminent high profile arrest, he will be transfered. There, another will come with same blablabla and so on. No news here, same same but different.

Quite a nice new lucrative posting compared to where he is coming from. What is the transfer fee these days to become the top cop in the top money making province?

20-35 Mil.... Just guessingcoffee1.gif

Shouldn't that be:

"Anyone who has a problem with the police..."

Try him out. He may be the "one".

Indeed he may be. The self appointed experts have already predicted his outcome. They are amazing in their ability to predict what this man will do when they most likely know nothing about him. "Judge not lest ye be judged"?

It will take a very brave man to take on the viscious thugs and deep rooted Mafia that run and control Phuket.

It will also take more than one brave soul.

its 3 million just for koh phangan so I couldnt imagine what you would have to pay for all of phuket. I would think he should own about 20 KFC franchises by the end of his run.

Arrives with an escort of 9 police cars, hell they must have all come from Bangkok or his last place, cost a lot less if he had flown AirAsia.

I have seen these motorcades on the motorways Queen of England does not get that many.

Some of us have seen so many come and go... once they realise how much money is to be made here, why should he be any different?

Times are changing for the corrupt people of Phuket.

I just hope they don't decide to move to another province...?

What we do know is the Police can't get an worse.

What you may not realise is that these guys PAY (or have friends in high places) to come here because it is a money making machine for all those involved in supposedly "upholding the law".

The "tea money"/ bribes/drug involvement by the BIB is far too great to stop and anyway if one person tried to he would be immediately sent elsewhere. Don't forget that this money also goes to many other folk well up the chain.

No, "the goose that lays the golden eggs" will not be killed, that's why things won't change here, despite the occasional act of "window dressing".

Thank you Xylophone.

It sounds like a job for a Facebook type social media campaign to start to bring more awareness. Public pressure is sometimes the only way.

Just by way of contrast to all the folks here who criticise Thailand as being a world "hub" of corruption, evil and crime, last night the Australian Broadcasting Commission ABC TV, Four Corners program broke a story on corruption involving the Federal Reserve Bank, Securency, their polymer note making subsidiary, the Australian Securities Commission and the Australian Federal Police.

We are also talking here about personnel that reach right to the top of the organisation. Not just lowlifes, but high life lowlifes. Untouchables.

I am not surprised but a lot of people would be or will be.

As far as I am concerned, this is a public government owned free to air television broadcasting first, which just goes to show. The times they are a changin'.

They can and should change. Its only natural.

That's one of a statement ! For those unacquainted with phuket and the police, your reasoning does make sense indeed
